Head slightly crested ; crown, crest, and ear-coverts blackish brown; sides of the face dull white, speckled with black ; chin white ; throat deep black, crossed by a broad crescent-shaped mark of pure white; all the upper surface dark brown, freckled and marked with sandy buff; each of the scapularies with a large patch of black near the tip of the inner web, and a stripe of buff down the centre; all the wing-coverts with a spot of white at the tip ; primaries and spurious wing dark brown, without the usual markings on the outer web ; breast and under surface rich reddish chestnut, with a large spot of white in the centre of each feather; vent and under tail-coverts deep brown, tinged with buff; bill and feet blackish brown. I proposep the specific term strophium for this new species, as indicative of the peculiar form of the white mark on the throat. The only specimen I have seen is the one I at present possess, but which will here- after be deposited in the British Museum. It appears to be an adult male, and in form is very robust ; i i ighs, whic | , diminutive size of the tail, give it a somewhat outré particularly in the legs and thighs, which, with the diminutive ail, g appearance.
