Face and a broad stripe over the eye buffy white ; ear-coverts and crown of the head brown ; feathers of the sides and back of the neck rich chestnut, margined on each side with white ; feathers of the upper part of the back rich chestnut, margined with slate-grey ; breast grey, with a stripe of reddish chestnut in the centre of each feather; back dark greyish brown, very minutely freckled with black; wings brown, freckled with buff and black ; primaries deep rust-red ; tail dark brown, freckled with buff and black; irides clear brown ; feet red; bill black. Total length, 131 inches; bell, +; wing, 71; tal, 6; tarst, 23; middle toe and nail, 12. Ortyx leucophrys, Gould in Proc. of Zool. Soc., Part XI. p. 132. Tuis fine species is a trifle smaller than Dendrortyx macrourus, from which it is distinguished by the conspi- cuous stripe of white which surmounts the eyes. Three examples are all that have come under my notice ; one of which is in the collection at the Jardin des Plantes at Paris, and the other two in the possession of the Earl of Derby; of the latter one is now living in his Lordship’s aviary ; the other, a mounted specimen, has been kindly lent me by his Lordship for illustration in the present monograph.
