Male. —Forehead, line over the eye and chin pure white, bounded by a band of black, which

descends and spreads broadly over the throat ; crown of the head, neck and upper part of

the breast reddish brown; sides of the neck spotted with white and black on a reddish

brown ground; back, scapularies and lesser wing-coverts reddish brown, intermingled

with ash and freckled with black; tertiaries edged with buff; wings dusky ; lower part
of the breast and belly pale yellowish white, crossed with numerous arrowhead-shaped
marks of black; tail ash-colour, freckled with reddish brown ; bill black ; irides dark
hazel; legs very pale ash.

Female.—Similar in colour but less brilliant, and with the forehead, line over the eye and chin

yellowish brown instead of white.

Total length, 9 inches ; Az//, 2; wing, 4:3 tail, 3; tarse, 11; middle toe and nazl, 12.
