The female is very Hobby-like in plumage, and has the tail grey, banded with black, and the upper surface broadly barred with black; the under surface creamy white, the breast broadly streaked and the flanks barred with black; the abdomen, thighs, and under tail-coverts uniform pale rufous. Young birds are like the old female, but have the feathers edged with rufous. The figures in the Plate are drawn from specimens lent me by Mr. Henry Seebohm from the Swinhoe collection ; they represent an adult male and female, of about the size of life.
