Dear Dr. Allens At the request of Coach Bible of the University of Texas, I am quoting you rates for your Basket Ball Team of about twenty men, effective December 16th and 17th. Where as many as four men occupy the same room, which are very large, private bath connecting, separate beds, we can make a rate of 75¢ per man. Where two men occupy the same room, we can make a special rate of $1.00 per man. We trust that the above rates will prove satis- ‘factory and that we may have your team with us during your stay in Austin. Allen, Director Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: I have called up the two leading hotels, The Austin Hotel, and the Driskill Hotel, and have asked that they write you, giving you the best rate. I told them you were willing to put two men to a bed and have two double beds to a room if they would give you the proper rate. The Driskill told me it would be about seventy-five cents per mane The Austin Hotel did not tell me what it would be. I am sure you will hear from both hotels in the near future, and I am sure that both are prepared to give you the accommodations and you would not make a mistake in stopping at either hotel. Looking forward to seeing you when you are here with your team, and with best wishes, I am, Yours very cordially, AX D. A. J. W. ST. CLAIR DALLAS, TEXAS EXECUTIVE SECRETARY September 3, 1938, Mr. Forrest C, Allen, Head Basketball Coach, The University of Kansas, lawrence, Kansas, Dear Mr. Allens I asked Messrs, Baccus and Gray to submit to me @ list of six officials, each, for you to chose from, in my opinion, they have selected feem the best of= ficials, The list submitted by Mr. Baccus for your games with S. M. U. is as follows: Jack Sisco, Head Football Coach, North Texas, State Teachers College, Denton, Texas, Abb Curtis, Fort Worth, Texas. Doc Hayes, Dallas, Texas, Dusty Boggess, San Antonio, Texas, Bill Bushman, Dallas, Texas, Den Lynch, Dallas, Texas, I consider Sisce and Curtis the two best officials we have and neither lives in Dallas, Boggess is a good of- ficial, but this would entail a pretty heavy expense in bringing him from San Antonio, Mr, Gray's list is as follows: Ziggy Sears, Fort Worth, Texas, Doc Hayes, Dallas, Texas, Jack Sisco, Denton, Texas, Dusty Boggess, San Antonio, Texas, Claude Kellam, San Antonio, Texas, Abb Curtis, Fort Worth, Texas. You probably would not want Mr. Curtis and he probably would not want to work in a Texas U. game as he is an alumus of Texas U. I think Mr. Gray overlooked this fact in putting his name on the list. I think any two from the four top ones would be very satisfactory. At your early convenience please select the officials you desire from these two lists, Should you desire time to SOUTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENGE TEMPORARY OFFICE Jd. W. ST. CLAIR S.M.U. The interest in basketball here in Austin does not reach its peak until well after Christmas, and I feel sure that we cannot make expenses on this series. In view of this fact, I feel sure that we must do everything to curb our expenses and try to stay within our basketball budg- et. Two years ago we played the University of Southern California at approximately the same time that our games are scheduled and we suffered a considerable loss. I agree with you that basketball lacks uniformity, but I feel that our officiating here in the Southwest Conference is something like that in the Big Six. Last Christmas we played a two-game series with the University of Oklahoma here at Austin and at that time we used Southwest Conference officials, and I honestly believe that Coach McDermott was well satisfied. I do not feel hesitant in the least way in recommending Ziggy Sears for our gamese At the present, Mr. Sears is the Umpire in the National League and has many years ex- perience in both football and basketball officiating. I believe that Mr. St. Clair, newly appointed Commissioner here in the Southwest Conference, will agree that Mr. Sears is one of the best officials in the game today, and I wish that you would have him suggest the second official from this Conference to work with Mr. Sears in this series. I am certainly in favor of uniformity in the officiating of basketball, and I will do everything that I possibly can to help improve that condition, but under the present circumstances I feel it will be impossible for us to bring Mre Quigley to Austin. W. ST. CLAIR S.M.U. EXECUTIVE SECRETARY DALLAS, TEXAS July 26, 1938. Mr. Forrest C. Allen, Head Basketball Coach, The University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Mr. Allen: In reply to your letter of July 15th, I wish to state that I shall do my best to carry out your request in regard to Mr. Quigley as an official for our games with you and those of yours with Texas. I am sure that it would be agreeable with Southern Methodist Uni- versity and Texas if the expense of bringing Mr. Quigley were not too high. Will you please let me know just what fee we would have to pay him per game and a close ap- proximation of his traveling expenses? I am taking my vacation hard at work as I have much to learn before making my first assignment of officials. I am indeed delighted to know that you are going to make a trip down this way. In your letter of July lst, you stated that you were sorry that Billy Dewell would not be playing in our games. I am glad to report that he will be as this is his senior year. Yours truly, ft . ,
