THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS LAWRENCE OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR September 7, 1938 Dr. F. C. Allen University of Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: This will acknowledge receipt of your letter of September 6 concerning the conflict in dates between the Lecture Course and the basketball game on February 9. On receipt of your letter, I wired immediately to the bureau manager, requesting a change in date if possible. His re- ply, just received, indicates that no other satisfactory date is open. Remembering my correspondence in connection with the lecture by Mr. Gunther, I thought that there would probably be no alternative date, but I wired in the hope that a change in his lecture schedule in recent weeks would leave a date open. I am sorry that it is not possible to shift the date, because I should like to accommodate your proposed basketball schedule. Mr. Gunther is the star of the second semester lectures, and cancellation at this date, even if it were possible, would be out of the question. I have con- sidered your suggestion that the basketball game and the lecture be held on the same night in the Auditorium. I think this is out of the question, because of the disrupted seating arrangement that the Lecture Course patrons would have. For years we have followed the policy of cen- tralizing calendar reservations in the Chancellor's Office. We have found from experience that conflicts can be avoided in no other way. If a check is not made with this office before a contract is signed and if the event is not reported promptly to this office as soon as arrangements are completed, some conflicts are inevitable. Under the circumstances, the only defensible policy for us to follow is to give preference to the event which was scheduled with us in the recogni zed procedure. I shall be glad to discuss the problem of the con= flict with you. I hope, however, that you will be able to arrange another date with Mr. Iba. With best regards, I am Sincerely yours, Mates EN: R z tive Secretary
