Allen Director of Phy. Ed. and Varsity Basketball Voach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: Your letter of September 30th received this morning. I was in hopes that it would be possible for us to accept the dates of December 22nd and 23rd to play in Kansas City. I checked with Captain Roberts, commanding V-12 officer, and he informs me that we will have to stay within the forty-eight hour rule. Since our last game was to be played on Saturday and we could return by Sunday morning, I thought they would be more lenient with this rule but it seems that it is a ‘thot potato' and the only sefe way for the commanding officer is to stay within it. I am wondering if it would be possible for us to play in Kansas City on any one date, say December 22nd,er—December 23rd. If we could do this it means that we can satisfy the Navy re- quirement but realize this presents management problems. If such a thing would work out, I would appreciate your letting me know at your earliest convenience as we have a conference basketball schedule meeting coming up October 16th. While talking with you yesterday I forgot to ask you about what arrangements you can make with Tom Dorney about letting his High School youngsters in on their season tickets. I imagine you will sell High School tickets at a reduced price and that will be all Northeast would want. You see it is Tom's home game and he is under obligations to his students that hold season tickets. I imagine that his players, and the students will draw enought older people in to the game to justify it. Harold Reade asked me the other night if we couldn't get Marion Wools, coach of Wyandotte, to work his game with Rockhurst High the night of the 12th. Dear Reaves: George Edwards and I talked over the phone last night about our games in Kansas City on December 22 and 23, and thought it would be best to have Colorado play Missouri on Friday night, and Kansas meet Kansas State that night. Then on Saturday night we will have Kansas vs. Missouri, and Nebraska vs. Kansas State. _ Sinee there is no possible way to play an elimin-~ ation tournament, with winners playing winners, and losers playing losers, we thought our drawing power would be better by heaving the Kansas-Missouri game on Saturday night. Missouri has a veteran team back, end we have only one of our regulars from last year. | We will appreciate your handling all other details, and to supervise the games. re ee I question whether we should pay the price to timers and scorers that are paid for the NCAA games. There are many of our boys that could do those things, and I think complimentary tickets for their friends would suffice as payment. I would like your opinion as to whether it is necessary to pay a high price for this service, which is done at home without any expense, and could be done for these games, I believe, without mich expense. Would it be possible to get Ab Curtis and Oberhelman for the 2and and 23rd series? I like Ab Curtis very much. He and harhelmn, in my opinion, are tops. | You gan see by the enclosed letter that Bruce does not want to meet a Big Six tean prior to the conference season. That rather makes it difficult, so I thought the best thing to do was not to have Aansas appear in too many games. Our squad does not look promising at all. Why cannot we get him on our list, and although he camnot work for Kansas, he would be a de~ cided improvement on many Big Six officials that I imow of. I was down to the Tulsa-Kansas football game and heard many flattering reports. I sew Zeke and he is very enaxious to get on both the football and basketball lists. Why don't you give him a break, or at least give him e chance knd he will prove himself, I am gure. Iwas very much gratified to learn of the fine progress that he has made.
