it, and certainly if we put the other boards up it would look as

Bven though you have lost Pippin you will still be
stronger than we are. We lost to Washburn last night in a rather
heetic game, so I am not sure just how we will look in conference
competition. I believe we are gging to have a fine crowd. Even
though our team is not up to par, the type of competition and the
schools will draw the crowd, I am sure.

Dear Dr. Allen:

Whether glass or wooden backstops are installed
for our games in the Municipal Auditorium makes no
difference to me. My observation has been that players
compile about the same percentage of success agains t
either type- In case, though, that the attraction forces
sale of seats at the end of the court I am sure that
glass backstops add to spectator enjoyment. These comments
are made simply with the idea of submitting all factors
as far as I know them. You may disagree with the reaction
of players, and if you do then by all means see that wooden
backstops are erected-

At the time we discussed the game arrangement I
thought we might be able to give Colorado a real battle,
but now 1 fear it will be too lopsided. You see, I had
Pippin at that time and he was going great guns. However,
he became 18 years old late in October and has been drafted.
We wontt have much without him, but maybe we will learn
enough by meeting strong teams to be a little better in
conference play.

I am sending you a carbon copy of a letter that I
have written to Bruce Drake. Since Bruce will not be in on
our 22nd and 23rd games I am hoping that he will take the
initiative in working out the 15th and 16th. I will be glad
to help him in every way possible.

| It reeeived a letter from Frosty Cox stating, “I was
in opes that it would be possible for us to accept the dates
of December 22nd and 25rd te play in Kansas City. I checked with
Captain Roberts, commanding V-12 officer, and he informs me that
we will have to stay within the forty-eight hour rule. Since our
last geue was to be played on Saturday and we could return by Sun-
day morning, I thought they would be more lenient with this rule
but it seems that it is a ‘hot potato’ and the only safe way for

commanding officer is to stay within it. I am wondering if
it would be possible for us to play in Kansas City on any one date,
gay Decenber 22nd, or December 25rd. If we could do this it means
that we oan satisfy the Navy requirement but realize this presents
management problems. If such a thing wuld work out, { would appreo-~
iate your letting me know at your earliest convenience as we have @
conference basketball schedule meeting coming up October 16th.”

I have written Frosty asking which date he would prefer,
22nd or 23rd, but I thought Colorado would be a stronger draw-
card on the 23rd. Then if we oan get somebody to fill in on
22nd souri, Kansas State and Kansas can go ahead with

Dear George:

Thanks for your two good letters. I appreciate your remarks and
assure you that any time Missouri plays in Kansas City, so far as
Kansas is concerned, we want to be on the bill. You are very un-
selfish to offer to do the things that you do, but I would not hear
to that.

I am writing Frosty Cox today and enclosing a copy of my letter
herewith, asking if he would like to go in on the games on December
22 and 23 with Missouri, Kensas State and Kansas. If he does we ,
will consider that our foursome is all made up and begin to plug
the publicity.

- Wheat I am also trying to do, George, is to arrange some games for
‘the 15 and 16. You remember Bruce and the Pre-Flighters want to
piay on the 16th, and Bruce is not interested in the 15th. So it
may be that we cannot arrange the 15th and 16th deals, but I am
planning on Missouri being with us as well as Kansas State on the
22nd and 23rd.

Regarding the discussed difficulties with Frosty, the only diffi-
culty I ever had with Frosty was when he scoured the State of Kansas
for his Colorado basketball team. He did not do it one year, but
repeatedly. I never object to retail proselyting, but when it comes
to wholesale I think that is rather out of place, especially when
one state goes into the other in a consistent and strenuous manner.

Dear Dr. Allen:

Your letter of the 20th found me in St. Louis
attending to business and publicity details of the game.
with Arkansas. Sorry for the delay in this reply.

In my letter to Shelton on August 12 I invited
him for either the week-ends of the 16th or 23rd with
preference on the latter because we thought it would draw
better; that teams would be in condition to play more
smoothly; and I might encounter some difficulty in getting
off the extra day from school. In his answer of August 21
he said he couldn't come on the 23rd because of earlier
plans, and added: "We believe that Dec. 15 and 16 will be
too early to draw much". I assumed from this exchange of
Letters that he couldn't come of the preferred dates and
didn't care to come earlier. Such was my report to you.
Your more recent letter infers that he might reconsider in
regard to the 15th and 16th.

You might be interested in why I expressed doubt
about our obtaining permission for the early dates. We do
have a regulation limiting days missed from classes for any
team during a semester. This has often been viola§ed when
attractive games could not otherwise be scheduled, but each
time special requests have come asking coaches to live up to
the rule. When I made the remark to Ev our schedule at the
time already asked for one day over the limit and the 15th
date would extend it another. I always hesitate about and try
to avoid asking the Committee to set aside its regulations.

Developments later forced me to drop consideration
of a game at Lansing, Mich., for this reason, and instead I
arranged for an exchange with Westminster for Dec. 15 and 18
since such games would entail no absences from classes. I
dislike to cancel these games unless something more attractive
can be arranged.

Therefore, by cancelling or shifting the Westminster
dates it is possible for us to participate in a four way
arrangement on the 15th and 16th due to dropping the trip to
Michigan State. But I still prefe¢ the week later for the
games in Kansas City if a fourth team can be found.

Your proposal for a four team set-up on the 15th
and 16th consisting of Oklahoma, Iowa Pre-Flight, Kansas
and Missouri is very attractive. The ability of Pre-Flight
to participate is doubtful, as you know. It is with Bruce
that I am more concerned, though, because he stated several
times and very emphatically that he never would consider
entering a contest with a Big Six team in an exhibition game.
I really don't believe he will change from that stand.

As I see the possibilities, then, they are:

1. Oklahoma, Pre~Flight, Kansas, and some other non-conference
team could take the dates of the 15th and 16th with Oklahoma
and Kansas exchanging opponents but not meeting each other.

Again, I am sure that is the only way Bruce will come. That
will leave us out, but don't fear any hurt feelings of Missouri.
You see I am volunteering to withdraw simply in order to let
Bruce live up to his desire to meet only non-conference teams,
and I can assure you no resentment will be felt by me. Also,
if any Missouri followers complain I'll make proper explanations.

I should like to point out that you still will have the
problem of finding a fourth team,- the difficulty which handicaps
the plans for the 22nd and 23rd.

2. If Bruce will reconsider, and Pre-Flight is available, so
that you could use Missouri on the 15th I'll try to change our
Westminster dates. This can be done all right, but I don't care
to discuss it with Kimbrell until something is definite about
Oklahoma and Pre-Flight.

Have you thought about Kansas State being sore about
elimination from the K.C. games and the substitution of Oklahoma ?

3. Continue trying to find a fourth team for our series on
the 22nd and 23rd.

Could Pre-Flight be obtained ? Unless they already have
those dates taken it would be as easy for them to join us with
K. State as to join you and Oklahoma.

I side with you in questioning the choice of Washburn,
but would favor them over dropping the games. Other suggestions,-
probably no better,- are Rockhurst, Warrensburg, Wichita, Olathe
Naval Base, Pittsburgh, Maryville, Empopia Teachers. These are
none of as great drawing power as Iowa Pre-Flight or Oklahoma
A & M, but would be better than po program at all. Rockhurst
certainly would bring lots of people,

From private expressions made to me many times I
wish to avoid the embarassment of asking to enter a series
with Oklahoma A & M. It is easy for me to predict the
Committee vote.

In conclusion, I want to thank you for your frank
. discussion of these proposals. It is so easy to do business
when each knows what the other is thinking. I take it that
if you make the arrangements for the 15th and 16th in which
Missouri does not participate that all plans for the 22nd
and 23rd are off.

As soon as you reach decisions I would like to
know where we stand for if we are unable to play in K.C. I
would like to make other arrangements before all teams close
their schedules.

box at noon today I am in receipt of a letter from
Frosty Cox. He says that Colorado is resuming varsity
basketball this winter and enquires if there is any
chance of breaking into some Kansas City games. [
guess that Shelton passed the word along to him.

Seems like I've heard of some personal friction
between you and Frosty. If that is true he and his
team may not be welcomed by you in such a series and I
wouldn't attempt to be a peacemaker. From my own point
of view, though, Colorado would make a swell fourth team
for the 22nd and 23rd games. I have taken the liberty
to tell him that there was an opening when I last heard
from you, and to wait a few days before sewing up the
dates until either you or I can get him word.

If, for any reason, you are willing to bring in
Colorado but wish me to handle the correspondence I shall
be glad to do so, However, if you prefer not to I will
refuse him,- if you want me to do SO,- in a manner that
will hurt no one.

Your letter of the 18th was delivered while
I was in St. Lovis dealing with preliminary details —
for our game with Arkansas last Saturday. It was mis- —
placed by the stenographer and has just been handed to
me.

Glad to know that Colorado will again be
back on the basketball map this season, end hope you
are fit enough to do your usual good job of coaching.

Kansas State, Kansas and Missouri have some
tentative plans to play in Kansas City, December 22
and 23, in a series of two double headers with a fourth
team to be selected. We thought Shelton would be interested
but find he can't come.

fhe three Big Six schools have delegated
Dr. Allen to act as chairman of arrangements, and I do
not have definite information at this time as to what moves
he has made to obtain a fourth team. With this letter I
am mailing him a note telling him that you may be available.

I should know in a week or so whether or not
another team has been chosen and just what plans have been
devised. You can expect to hear from me or Dr. Alien in
less than two weeks as to a possible spot for Colorado in
this series. In the meantime, I would like to know if
you definitely are available for these dates, and if you
Will hold them open until about October 7.

Once I heard of a Dutchman. He was not named
Hoff, but his name was Kloppf. Ue was to serve on the jury.
He got so so excited and mixed up, and he said, "Goodeby,
wifey, goodeby. I got to leave my home in the country and —
go to Kansas City and serve on the jury. I know I am going
to run over the oar and kill somebody.”

. It is queer, when these Dutch have things explained
to them sometimes fairly clearly that they oannot get it. I
went in to talk to Ralph Baker, and Hoff dropped in. I was
going down to see Mr. Hoff later and explain to hin, but I
wanted the dates held.

Dear George:

Iam writing you a letter in utter franidiess so that there will be no
misunderstanding. Everett Shelton wrote saying that you thought the 15th
and 16th of December ware too early. I think Shelton could play on the
15th and 16th, but he is playing Michigan on the 23rd as he desires to
keep his game with the Big Ten. However, he is very anxious to play in
Kansas City at some time and hopes that he can arrange it.

He stated in his letter that you thought the 15th and 16th were too early
to draw a good crowd. I do not know what arrangements he has made for
these dates, if any, since he wrote because I have not commmicated with
him, but he cannot play the 22nd and 23rd.

Bruce Drake is going to play the Iowa Seahawks in Kansas City on the 15th
or 16th. He wanted us to play the Oklahomm Aggies. Although our Chancellor
has objected to ow playing the Aggies, I wrote Ir. Hank Iba on the contin-
gency that the Chancellor might reconsider his previous stand. Hank is
playing in Philadelphia at that time. Bruce wanted us to play some tean
when they play the Seahawks. Anyhow, for the 22nd and 23rd we have tentatively
agreed on Missouri, Kansas State and Kansas, but George, we have no one for
the fowrth competitor. Washburn University wants to play, but frankly I do
not believe they will draw sufficiently to include then. What do you think?

The reason I wrote you so definitely about this thing was that I believe
Ev Shelton would play either the 15th or 16th, and I would not want to
agree with Bruce Drake that Wyoming come in atti make the foursome with the
Iowa Seahawks, Oklahoma and Kensas. It might appear that we were
.to shut Missouri out of the picture on the 15th and 16th. How do you feel

on te 15th or 16th for Kansas and Missouri to make the foursome with Okla-
homa and Iowa Pre-Plight?

It might be that if you are agreeable, if the Pre-Flight School could get
away, that Oklehoma play the Seahawks on one night and Kansas and Missouri
could play the second game of a double-header, and then the next night it
could be arranged to have Missouri play either Oklahoma or the ——
— and Kansas play the other tean.-

Of course, that would cut out the possibility of our 22nd and 25rd
arrangement with Missouri, Kensas State and Kansas. Mike Ahearn has
written saying that Kensas State would be very happy to play in the
Auditorium with Missouri and Kansas. —

I have endeavored to write you fully and scieieiaiibeeat on this
tentative arrangement. Won't you write me at your earliest convenience
telling me what you really want? I have absolutely done nothing with
anyone, with the exception of a tentative errangement in Kansas City
with Bruce Drake and the arene coach toward playing on the 15th
and 16th.

Dear Dr. Allen:

A special delivery air mail letter was just
sent to Ev, Shelton at Wyoming telling him about the
possible arrangements for games in the Auditorium. He
was urged to join us in double headers in the Auditorium
with the dates of December 22 and 23 preferred.

I have requested him to wire a reply to me
in Kansas City by next Wednesday if possible. For fear,
this being normal vacation time, that Ev may be delayed
a few days in reading my letter I have told him to send
his decision to you if he can't answer by Wednesday. You
see I will be hopping around a good deal between the 17th
and September 1 and will be rather hard to find during
that period, and I am leaving matters in your hands until
I am back in Columbia.

After thinking over this proposal I find myself
much in favor of the December 22nd and 23rd dates partly
because they fall in vacation, and partly because I think
better crowds will be attracted. The strictness with which
our committee views the missing of classes makes it necessary
that I confer with Mr. Shirkey before I could be certain of
December 15 and 16 in the event that Wyoming wants the earlier
dates. In other words, I am inclined to close with the hall
for the 23rd and 24th and hunt for another team if Shelton
can't come at that time.

Should Shelton send me word before I leave here
I'll notify you immediately, and also will tell Peters and
Mr. Hoff or Baker at the Auditorium. In case Shelton writes
to you and accepts will you attend to the notifications,
please ?

It doesn't look.too good for a High School game on firday
night at this time; most teams have their quota of games allowed, or
they have a game scheduled that they can't move. Will kkep trying.
Talked to Clyde Baker a few minutes ago about arrangements, High School
tickets, etc. Sent the wires out to the coaches yesaterday. Paul says
they must have the gloss prints, the others won't do.

Officials are so busy around here at this time. Markey came
up with a bad attack of Sinus last night so I called Roy Brown at 1:00
a.m. and he will be there, as the bearer of this note would indicate.
I remember that he was satisfactory with you when he worked at the
Aud. here last year, even though you thought he lacked experience. I
feel sure that he will be ok. tonight.

: If you think of any details that we have not discussed about
the games this week end send the word along by Roy.

To Basketball Coaches
Big Six Conference:

Gentlemen:

Capt. Ted O'Sullivan has been sent home on leave and
he thinks he will be here from now on; he expects to get out of
the service before January lst.

Many officials have already been assigned but there
are ea few conference games, and most of the non-conference games, #B@
to be assigned. If you would like to have Ted on your list won't
you let me mow at once. Please let me know. just where you want to
put him in relation to the men you selected here on August l2th.

I have the non-conference games from a few of the
schools but need all of them as soon as possible. Feel free to
suggest officials for these games if you care to but with the
exception of near-by service teams all officials are to be assigned
from this office; this is in accordance with instructions given
me by the Directors some time ago.

We will hold our annual clinic for basketball officials
here in Kansas City on December 5rd. Any suggestions you may care
to make will certainly be appreciated. I wish it were possible
to meet with you before the season opens, but that will be imposs~
ible. If you have some definite criticisms to make of the officiating

you received last year we would be glad to get it.

Each one of you have definite ideas of how a basketball
game should be worked; if we could only get a composite picture
of this it would be of immense value to all officials. Since this
can't be done,the next best thing id to have expressions fopm each
of you and then interpret them in teerms of what the book says.

I regret very much that I cannot accept this date since

I am booked for a game that night which just last Saturday
I positively assured the men that I would be on hand

Dear Doc:

While talking to you last friday about Oberhelman I forgot
to mention the fact to you that he had been assigned to a number of your
games at Lawrence. You will remember he was the number 1 official of
most of the coaches when your games at lawrence was mentioned.

I don't believe it would be good psychology for him to work
in either of your two games with Kansas State but I see no reason why
he should not work in any other game where Kansas plays if both coaches
want him.

I have made a thorough investigation of all that happened
at Manhattan in the Kansas-Kansas State game and all actions and
callings that were made by Mike Oberhelman were above criticism by
anyone that wanted to be fair about it. He is an excellent official
and a gentleman all the way as you know; we must at all times do
everything possible to protect men of that caliber. I realize that
outside criticism and influence does play a part but we must see to
it that they don't play too important a part. Here is a splendid
opportunity to prove that to all that may be interested.

I am looking forward with interest to the two double-headers
tp be played here the nights of December 22-23,

Very little has been done to work out a set of signals
that basketball officials can give to the coaches and spectators
that they ay know what is going on out on the floor.

I am collecting all the data available foon all parts of
the country and hope to come up with something worth while. I
know you will want to cooperate with me in getting this infor-—
mation to the public before your season begins. I believe it will
be of interest to the spectators as well aé informational,

ae don't want a complicated system that will be difficult
to give and even more difficult to remember. Keep in mind that at
various times when an official needs to give a — he will have
the wan in one hand, |

wall you sit down and do some tall thiintitne end come up
with some ideas thet you can shoot on to me right away. Our clinic
will be held here. on December 3rd, and I will want all information
in and assembled before that date. I don't know of anyone more |
interested in this than you coaches, nor do I know anyone that
should be better able to figure out some good signals- you are
always figuring out the angles in your play.

Ags you know commercial promoters are busy in all our cities
trying to get college teams to come in andplay that they the pronm-
oters may wax fat off the take. I like the idea of this sort of

competition but feel that the colleges should get all the —
I don't know of anyone thing that will cause conference Heads
insist that all competition go back to the _— “~ —
than schools playing for promoters.

I don't know whether or not you “patie town cesenibia by
anyone here for games but if you are beware of the promoter. It.
is not as rosy as he may think, and he may not be as reliable as oa
you may think. There is some concern among the followers of good oe
basketball that real damage to our following here may be jepordized
by such individuals making a flop of such ventures- a flop to
themselves, the colleges,or both.
