Dear Mike: I had written George Edwards asking whether he wanted glass or wooden backboards for our games in Kansas City on December 22 and 23. His thought was that in case our games attract a large sale of seats at the end of the court, the glass backstops would add to spectator enjoyment. So I thought that the spectators might think we had not been mindful of them if we put up wooden boards. There- fore, I have asked the Hall people to put up glass boards. I would appreciate it if you will pass this on to Frits Knorr. I believe we are going to have a fine crowd. , If there is anything that I can do to aid in the relationship of our teams, please let me know. Mr. Me FP. Ahearh, Director of Athletics, Kansas State College, Manhatten, Kansas. Dear Mike: _ T am sending you a carbon copy of a letter that I have written to Bruce Dreke. Since Bruce will not be in on our 22nd and 23rd games I am hoping that he will take the initiative in working out the 15th and 16th. I will be glad to help him in every way possible. I reesived a letter from Frosty Cox stating, “I was in hopes that it wuld be possible for us to accept the dates of December 22nd and 23rd to play in Kansas City. I checked with Captain Roberts, asada V-12 officer, and he informs ne that we will have to stay within the forty-eight hour rule. Since our last game was to be played on Saturday and we could return by Sun- day morning, I thought they would be more lenient with this rule but it seems that it is a thot potato’ and the only safe way for the commanding officer is to stay within it. I am wondering if it would be possible for us to play in Kansas City on any one date, say December 22nd, or December 23rd. If we could do this it means that ws can satisfy the Navy requirement but realize this presents management problems. If such a thing would work out, I wuld appreo- iate your letting me kmow at your earliest convenience as we have @ conference basketball sehedule mpeting coming up October 16th." iI have written Prosty Galiiing Wakshs Gave he wedia prefer, the 22nd or 25rd, but I thought Colorado would be 4 stronger draw- ing card on the 23rd. Then if we can get somebody to f111 in on the 22nd, Missouri, Kansas State and Kansas can go ahead with their plans and use Colorado and one other team to fill in for the fourth member. I had a letter from George Edwards today saying that Frosty Cox wes going to field atteam at Colorado and is interested in playing in Kansas City. As it now stands we have Kansas State, Missouri and Kansas in. If Frosty wants to go in that will make up our foursome and we will -— to plug the publicity. I am writing him today. So tell Pritz Knorr that we are trying to get something worked out, and will notify you as soon as a reply comes from Frosty. So if we can find another school with good drawing power I believe that we should make some money and have some good games. Let's consider this tentatively arranged, and in the near fiurture we will do the other necessary things. We already hmve the hall reserved, end only officials and our fourth participent will be necossarys Very sincerely yours, | Director of Physical Education, FCA :AH : Varsity Basketball Coach. KANSAS STATE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND APPLIED SCIENCE MANHATTAN DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS September 15, 1944 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Director of Physical Education, Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phogs Congratulations on your becoming a member of the hole-in-one club. A friend of mine who was talking to Mr. Jones who was a member of your foursome brings me the information that your tee shot was straight and true and from the moment the ball left your club-head there never was any doubt about where it was going to land. There is a wonderful feeling in making a hole-in-one, especially the first time, but after you have made several one becomes blase and takes the event as a matter of course. I can speak rather intelligently on this subject as I have made several holesin-one's. The fact is that it has happened to me twicee Here's hoping that it will not be too long before you make your second hole-in-one but that the next time you will hook your tee shot instead of slicing ite Now to change the subject and get a word or two in about basketball. We do have the 15th and 16th of Dec. open and we would like to play again in Convention Hall. We are reluctant to enter the Oklahoma City Tournament because we are not certain it would be permissible with our present Big Six rules. I read in the paper that you had a very fine banquet for Mr. Quigley a short time ago and that Quig paid you a very fine compliment. May I add that I think it was a much deserved comp limente Very cordially yours, Me Fe Ahearn, Director ' MFA*b September 6, 1944. Mr. M. Fe Ahearn, Director of Athletics, _ Kansas State College, Manhattan, Kansas. Dear Mike: It was good to hear from you, and I might add that I have — been greatly oversold on this ancient Scotch game. In fact, when you and I get together we would be like the two Jewish gentlemen who talked their score up into the nineties - for a bet - and when they came in one fellow said, "I had to shoot a 72 to beat that guy." Only that won't hold good for me, Mike, any more than for youe In regard to the Kansas City tournament, the plan was to have Reaves Peters handle the games so it would have Big Six blessing and supervision. The dates were December 15 and 16, and December 22 and 25. George Edwards and I have agreed, and Fritz said that he would try to get the sanction of Kansas State, but we aro havirig difficulty in getting the other member. George said that Everett Shelton of iyoming had written him, but Ev has a conflict in dates. Bruce Drake wants to play Iowa Pre-Flight in Kansas City and wants someone to play there with him. But nothing has been done about it. Would you and Fitz have the 15 and 16 Open, and the 22 and 23 open? If so, I will get in touch with the responsible gentlemen and see if we can't work out something. I hope that Kansas State can enter because I believe that you a:e going to make a splurge in the Big Six with your basketball team. Now, about the Oklahoma City tournament. They have written me asking that we enter our team, but I am not at all sure that we will do so. What is your disposition in regard to entering the Okla- homa City tournament, after Christmas? I believe the Oklahoma City tournament does not have any of the Big Six supervision but rather I think it is rw by the Daily Oklahoman. If you learn more about the Oklahoma City tournament regarding supervision, won't you write me? Very cordially yours, Director of Physical fducation, FCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach, DEPARTMENT OF KANSAS STATE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND APPLIED SCIENCE MANHATTAN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ATHLETICS September 5, 1944 Dr. Forrest C. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phogs In talking with Frtiz Knorr about the basketball schedule this season he hinted that there might be another tournament in Kansas City during the Christmas holidays. Have you any information on such a program? What about this Oklahoma City tournament? Is it +" conducted under the supervision of a member of the Big Six conference or any other college organization? It if is conducted entirely according to the rules of the Big Six we might like to enter a team providing there are no games in Convention hall during the holidays. : I hear that your golf game is getting hotter and hotter and the next time we meet on the links one Forrest Ce Allen is going to give one Michael Francis Ahearn two bisques on each nine. Allen Director of Athletics and Varsity Basketball Coach University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doc: You should have received by this time material for publicity. We had cuts made from our pictures and will send you the mats. Len Perlmutter, a student who has been handling our publicity material, informs me that you should have the mats by the first of the week. The glass backboards will be all right with me. I have a hunch that Missouri might be pretty good even though they have lost one of their star players. I don't know at this time how good a team I will have. We have been out of competition for two seasons, have not had much continuity in coaching so consequently the boys are very inexperiénced. We are staying at the Muehlebach should you desire to get in touch with us the day of the same. Best wishes. Sincerely yours, ¢ Tofrést B./Cox December il, 1944. Certainly I am sure you could have it in the afternoon, I will let you hear as soon as I have word from Mr. Hoff. I also note that you leave at 11:30. We are planning on you playing the second game against Missouri that night. Missouri has a much stronger team than either Kansas or Kensas State, and I thought it would prove a better drawing card. We will play Kansas State in the first game. I am sorry that we do not have a strong team this year to give you the competi- tion to which you are entitled. We have not decided on the backboard.
