Dear Bruce: Attar pending your Jeter 2 quite nares. with you thet the double round robin would not be practical or financially advisable. I am hoping that Louis Menge, as soon as they get the poll from the direetora, will suggest that wo moet in Kansas City either — September 11 or 18. I do think that wo should get ow schedule ee ee a i ee a I do not believe the direst- ors are going to moot - they think they wouldn't have enough business - but I do not believe they will vote to permit us to play AAU teaus. They will feel that they let dam the bars only for patriotic reasons we can play the service teams, but I do not believe they will us to commercialize ou sport by playing AAU teams. Of course, leties are not commercialized, but the vulgar workers say, No, that would be a lowering of the standard. : 1 don't plane you, Brune, and if you want to play them, as Let us do it. BEE How in the world did you meke $500 clear in Kansas City? INTERCOLLEGIATE 1) DAPRERTICS SOT EERE Se Re THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA NORMAN : OKLAHOMA Aug. 31, 1943: ; Dr. F. ©, Allen University of Kansas. Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen:- I will be able to meet either the llth. or 18th. of Sept. to draw up our basketball schedule. Off the record Dr. here is the way I feel about the double round robin deal playing two games at each place. If it's for those extra games I'm in favor, but with the rules as they are and because of your central location woulden't it be better for the both of us to go afead and play as before and then schedule games that we thought we could make both. ends. As it is I must make basketball pay for itself this season, and I'm not sure whether or not we wovlden't go in the red on most of these games with the exception of yours and possibly Missouri.e With Iowa State so far off and the seating capacity so small there isn't mueh of a chance for us to make any money, but on the other hand when they come to Lawrence and Norman there is a chance for them to make on the games. In other words we will never be able to do any good on these game unless we would be able to swap ball games letting both teams payitheir own expenses. The same thing is true at Kansas State. If they happen to come along with a good ball team then when they come to Norman they might make some money, but could never pay us for coming there with the exception of the guarentee. I think I'm right in saying that we can now play where we want to. We could play you in K. ©. and you could play in 0. C. and nothing would be said. I don't think anything would prohibit: us from such games this year. I know the directors would never be in favor of such a swap out such as they have in the Missouri Valley, but with Missouri, Neb. Kansas and Oklahoma with large field houses, I see no reason why we coulden't run this thru. We will all be hampered this year with the inability to do as much travéling as usual, Navy and railroads etc. so I'm asking our director to bring up the question of playing A. A. U. teams for the duration. Phillips 66 is about as close to: you as it is to us, and with the rules as they are during this war, I see no dangers of these teams attempting to steal any boys that might be 17 years old. In other words Dr. I'm looking for games other than those with _ service teams, and the Good Lord knows I'll have plenty of those, that I have a chance to make a little more than the A. A. U. pays '. for their top notch attractions. Looks like the squak you gave out made the boys spuirm a little in their swivel chairs. Now if the rest of the boys want this double business I think it 0. K. We still might be able to play you a couple of games on the outside. Whatever the rest of the men want I'm willing to cast my lot for I think we must be solid now as never before with one school already dropping out. I do think however that we should be able to play these games at a location where we want them played so long as it's satisfactory to both concerned. Why woulden't it be possible to just swap games? That would be the simple way out and with K. S. out, there is just one school that would be affected. What do you think about it? Yes I remember when you were denied the right to play in Madison Square Garden. I remember about the 12 foot baskets and anything that you would bring up. After this sell me on the idea and I'll do the pushing for you.e There's more than one way to skin a snake. I sure wWepe that we meet not later than Sept. 18 so that we might start working on our schedules. Let me know when and in the meantime give the Denver game a thought or Kansas City. Might be able to play two games envolving four Big Six schools and shift partmers the following nite. Sine ruce Drake Coach of Basketball August 25, 1945. Kansas City would be a good time to meet, but Mike Ahear ‘there was no necessity for a director's mecting and thou the basketball couches should meet some time soon to drew up a basketball schedule. INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA NORMAN ;: KLAHOMA Bee 23, 1643 Dr. F, C, Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dri- Well the boys are finally seeing it your way, and I venture to say that if Dr. F. C. Allen will just sit back he will have the last chuckle. Their suggestion were made as possible changes after the war. The one that interested me was, “Award a field goal when a defensive player touches a try for goal above the level of the basket after the ball has started its downWard arc". They ask to try it out and I ask you what coach has enough g--=- to ask another coach who has such a goon to try it out even tho it isn't in the rules. I guess they don't like to give into you on the 12 foot basket just like I hate to give in to you on the courte I'm wondering if it isn't time for us to be drawing up some kind of schedule, or find out what schools are plann- ing on having five boys on the court. I believe we should keep it alive if possible. I suggested to our director Dale Arbuckle that we meet at the same time with the directors in K. C. Sat. Sept. 4 and draw up eur schedule. What's your reaction. Would you be interested in playing four games with me this year. Say one in Kansas Citys; Oklahoma Citys Lawrence and Norman. I think we both could help the flattened wallet. My regards to your family and best of everything for your continued success. Congragulations on your selection by Helms as the No. 1 Great in basketball coaching.
