October 16, 1943. _ Lt. Commander Harvey J. Harman, USNR Athletic Director, coe U. &S. Navy Pre-Flight School, Iowa City, Towa. Dear Commander Harman: I have not answered your letter because I am still debatin City. We played Great Lakes in the first world war in Kansas City, and played them twice in the second world war, and they have established a traditional drawing power. However, I think your football game with Missouri this Satur- day night will pretty definitely establish the Seahawks z power in Kansas City. Last year in December the weather was so terribly bad it was not a fair indication, but if you and I both think after the Missouri football geme that the Seahawks will draw woll in basketball we will go ahead, if agreeable with you. Sincerely yours, Direstor of Physical Education, FCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. U. S. NAVY PRE-FLIGHT SCHOOL IOWA CITY, IOWA October 5, 1943. Dear Mr. Allen: Lieut. Nordly and I appreciate your letter of Sept. 27tke We expect to have a right good team here this year in basketball, and I believe the Seahawks would draw well in Kansas City, not only in their own right, but because the Seahawk name will be in front of the public in connection with our football game their next week. Wince Kansas City is within our district, we would have no difficulty in getting permission to play the game if you feel the same way about it. I suggest that we go ahead with plans for the game. Cordially yours, Bite: Harvey J. Harman, Lt. Commander, USNR, Athletic Director. Mr. Forreet C. Allen, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. September 27, 1945. Lieut. 0. M. Nordly, USNR Iowa Pre-Flight School, Iowa, City, Iowa. Dear Lieutenant Nordly: It was a pleasure to meet you and have a visit with you in Kansas City on Sunday, the 19th. I am sending you a carbon covy of the letter I have written to Commander Harman, your athletic director. With all good wishes, I am Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, FCA: AH Varsity Basketball Coach. September 27, 1963. _ Towa, City, IoWae Dear Commander Hazan; While in Kansas City, your Lieutenant Nordly sat in with the Big Six basketball coaches. During our con- versation with Lt. Nordly I told him that last year "fony” Hinkle’s team and Kansas played in Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium, with a very inviting gate. Ye were to play again this year, but the Navy has refused to let Hinkle play any games out of the Fourth NCohede Gr@Re : We had a game scheduled with then for February 6, 1944, in Kensas City. I raised the question whether it would be lucrative as well as agreeable to play the Iowm Seahawks on that date. I am not sure how the game will drew, but am just writing asking if you would let me have your opinion comeerning this game. Of course, we would not Want to schedule it umless it would drew well. What do you ‘think about it? : I would appreciate your opinion contingent upon the possibility of scheduling a game. Very sincerely yours, Director of Phy ical Education, FCAAH Varsity Baskett Coach. I am wondering if Wichita U. is going to have a basketball team. We will use Navy men and of course it will be necessary for us to get back within 48 hours. i am explaining this because lial _ dates. And too, I think it wuld be impossible to play in a tourna- ment if you got one up at Wichita. We might play some service team if you think that would draw better than Wichita University. We have a lot of alumi in Wichita, and since they can't come to sec us play, we would go to them. Please keep this confi- dential, as I have a great number of schools which want to play hither and yon, but I have turned them dowmm. But I would do this for you if you think you could boost a good crowd. I missed you at Washburn. I locked for you, but apparently - you did not arrive. I would have enjoyed a chat with you. Within the next few days I will submit a list of the boys to you, and will designate the ones that I would like to have stay for longer practice. Of course, I under- stand that the boys on “restricted liberty" will not be permitted to stay later than 5:50. We are practioing at 4:50 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and perhaps by next Tuesday we will be able to keep certain of the boys later than 5:30. I will give you a list after our practice on Thursday of this week. Very sincerely yours, Direoter of Physical Education, PCA:AH — Varsity Basketball Coach. September 22, 1943. Mr. Reaves Peters, 342 So. Chelsea, Kensas City, Mo. Dear Reaves: Thank you for your letter of the 2ist. I am enclosing a copy of our Big Six schedule. Allen, Kansa s Bruce Drake , Oklahoma George Edwarés , Missouri A. J. Lewandowski, Nebraska Gentlemen: I contacted Mr. Hoff today and have very little news that is good to report. The date of Dec. 17 has been contracted for by an Evangelist and he will not make a change; he feels that the last night will be his big money night- I had always thought that they counted on the last night as an ideal night for saving more Souls. The night of the 18th. is open. The week-end of the 3lst. and lst. was suggested but that too is taken for the big Christmas party. The week-end of tke the 10-11 i8 taken but he feels sure that he could make a change here if you would care to come on that night. I remember that Nebraska has a game scheduled on that night; perhaps others have planned to play on that week-end. Mr. Hoff spent the entire day in an attempt to get the 17-18 open for you as he is very enxious to have you play here this Winter. He has some week-end datessopen in January but of course that would not help this combination. Sorry I couldn't make a more satisfactory report. ¢ very cordially yours, R. E. Peters P.S.
