There are several reasons why this office should assign all officials: | 1. Mr. Karl Kloog, Aoting Athletic Director, University of Kansas. Dear Karl: I am sending you a tm tative schedule of basketball games that I ~would like to have you submit to the Athletio Board for approval. The policy has been to make no long trips. The longest ones we plen on making are against our Big Six Conference members. I prefer to play, so far as possible, service teams in the state and adjacent to Lawrence. ile have a date Pebruary Sth with the Iowa Seahawks at Kansas City which is questionable, but we are holding that reservation in Kansas “ity so that we might piay somebody there to make some money if we are not successful in echeduling the Seahawks. This was a game with Great Lakes, originally, but the Great lakes cammndant refused to let the Great Lakes tean play outside of the fourth collegiate dis- trict, Big Ten area. John Lance, of Pittsburg Teachers, also wants us to play at Pitts- burg, but I have given him no encouragement. It would be a reciprocal guarantee if we played at Pittsburg. 3 The lutehinson Air Base also wanta to play us at Lawrence and at Hutehingon, and I think it would be a good thing if we could do so. i would suggest that we have one set of blank tickets printed with a service team notation on it when you have tickets printed. This date is not in the calendar at present, but I am rushing the schedule to you on account of the necessity for printing tickets. There are two things I would like to recommend - first, that we have an attractive basketball schedule printed on a card that will fit into a billfold, yet I would suggest that we make it much more attractive than . the football schedule. Sy comparison with Lawrence High School and Haskell, the appearance of our schedule card looked bad. And I would have a good many of these printed. iie could distribute them at Rotary, Kiwanis, Co-op, Eldridge Hotel, Sunflower Ordnance Works, and a great many places. I have been sending out commmications for two months regarding basketvall answering inquiries as to our possible playing dates, and so forth. I have told them that these dates must have confirmation, but people want a schedule that they can carry in their pocket so they oan consult it regarding their in and out of town dates. There has always been a great demand for these printed schedules, and I am sure that this year will be no exception. At the Country Club at least a humdred fellows ae from time to time have asked me about the schedule. Several people to whom I have spoken thought we were not going to play basketball. For that reason I would recommend that we have printed a large attractive window, card, say a hmdred at the minimm, to be distributed down town and left at places where the public can learn our dates and our opponents. These cards, in my opinion, will pay for themselves several times. And too, it casts a collegiate athletic atmosphere in the town to have some- thing attractive one readable during the basketball season as an urge to added attendance. — There is one point that I think we might discuss iiansilias the wg: mission of service men. I would suggest that we offer them a season ticket price low enough that you can make some yoney and if they do not take that then I would let them take the best seats available at reserved seat prices, the same as you have always done. This is none of my affair and I do not care to make any suggestions, only I thought the question might be in your mind. : oe One thing I am sure of, you are going to sell a lot of season tickets and you are going to have fine attendance at the basketball games. We will have a very young team but it will be a fighting team and a fighting team will draw a crowd i¢ you win a part of your games. ls _ Very sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, FCA :AH ; Varsity Basketball Coach.
