August 10, 1942. Mr. Harry H. Welsh, Jre, John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co., 922 Walnut Street, Kansas City, Mo. Dear Harrys I, too, am happy that we were able to come to a decision thet seems to have universal epproval. I assure you that I will be very happy to consistently cooperate with you for our mutual benefit. I am glad that you and Dorman O'Leary are enthusiastic about the double-header plans for next year. You remember that I told you it would be necessary for you and Dorman both to use your good offices with the Big Six Conference faculty representatives in influencing their decision to permit such — situations as this. , aS I see no reason why Big Six teams should not be able to play each other in the auditorium. They play service teams and the reason they permit that is from the patriotic standpoint. ‘The service teams need moneys While they need competition, their greatest need is money, and the Big Six Conference permits it. Certainly the Big Six teams need money. All their treasuries will be in bad shape. However, before the year is over the Big Six Conference will, I believe, permit their own teams to play each other in cities in which their schools are not lesa If you and Dorman can have a huddle with C. &, McBride I am sure that you could restore the Kanseas-Missouri indoor track meet in Kensas City, and while you are doing that it would be an easy matter to permit basket- ball teams to play in cities wherein the universities are not located. An expectant and a watchful policy will do this job if you and Dorman cen start the ball rolling. We have two alumi members in Kansas City end if you and Dormgy could meet with your representative committees at : lumoheon some time I am sure that you could get the job well on the way. The reason that I am mentioning this is that there will be a faculty meting of the Big Six in Kensas City in early September and another in December. It is so much easier to get the job done when the faculty meeting is in Kansas Cith than when they met at Lincoln or eise- where in May. The faculty are always more accessible and susceptible to you in Kensas City during the winter meting. I believe you get my point. I am sure that we will have a very fine crowd because 1 propose to make this a great patriotic gathering as well as fine athletic contests. With us in the war up to our necks and our playing the service teams it lends itself to a fine patriotic endeavor. . Sincerely yours, | _ ‘Director of Physical Education, FCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. |
