Dear Mr. Bayles: I wish to call your attention t a matter ce ee Reem Gymnasiums \ The doais entrance at the center of the building was found open when he came to work early in the morning and three young fellows were in the building. He reported then as very dirty, one dressed in overalls. Another morning the west entrance at the front of the gym was open and a young colored boy was in the building. Twice he has found one ot’ the doors to my office open when he came to work. © Will you kindly have the night watchman check up carefully as he patrols this building? It looks as if there must be some keys floating around somewhere. I recall that two or three years ago someone obtained entrance to my office and created a nuisance here. And another time a student was found several times on the second floor of the gymnasiun. With the restriction on golf balls, our players are even more anxious to have te grass cut so they can find thems My assistant on the course has also reports that there have been additional trees planted in the fairways. This is certainly a@ mental hazard, wad we hoped the planting might have been for- gotten in these fairweys directly in the flight of the ball. However, I do feel that the skating area is a very vital part of the student outdoor winter life and recreative activity, and I am very enthusiastic about doing every- thing we can in helping out the winter sports. Sut I do not want to . hobble or injure the intremural softball. Sincerely yours, , Director of Physical Education and Recreation, FCA :AH Varsity Basketball end Baseball Coach. UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS Pe LAWRENCE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION February 9, 1942. Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Department of Physical Education. Dear Doc: Just a note again regarding the intramural fields. Since intramural softball is one of the most popular sports on the intramural program, I am looking forward fara place to play this spring. We usually start the latter part of March. The condition of the west intramural field is such that I am confident we will not be able to use it for a long time. Incidentally, I am told that the field will be of no value wtil a concrete sewer is put through in the location of the present ditch, which Mr. Bayles says will cost $2700. Since the grade in the northeast end of the field is lower than the ditch it- self, we will always have drainage toward the southwest corner of the field. If the east fields are to have a permanent ice rink in one corner (and I haven't a sufficient amount of imagination to understand the justification of that procedure) it would only be possible for us to have one field and two fields for the women. In the last few days the other level land has been plowed. About the only thing I can see is to rent ground, and I think it would be possible to rent land at the site of the old Ban Johnson league ball park on 21st and Louisiana Street. I understand a man by the neme of Heffner has the renting of the land. His telephone is 2201. Sincerefy, E. R. Elbel. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS LAWRENCE DEPARTMENT OF BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS c. G. BAYLES, SUPERINTENDENT February 5,1942 Dre Fe Ce Allen, Director of Physical Education and Kecreation Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach University of Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: After our brief discussion of this morning con- cerning the facilities of a permanent location for the University skating area I dropped into the Chancellors Office and discussed it briefly with him. I believe he has tentatively agreed to a permanent location as it now is but for purposes of making final decision I would appreciate it very much if you would see him concerning the matter and write me a letter stating just what the official decision is. Upon receipt of this information we will do our best to build a permanent skating area which can be drained during the summer time which will carry approximately six inches of water over the entire area next fall after the Intramural games. With this information we will have the matter settled. I agree fully with the students that their Intramural fields have been pretty badly messed up.
