In this connection, I desire to make certain suggestions and recommendations: le Flood lights over the playgroumde Until such a time | as the Union Building can be air-conditioned, the need for lights on the playground is very urgent. Many requests were made by > students last sumer for lights so that they might continue their outdoor play for a longer time in the evenings On a separate sheet I have itemised the cost for the flood lights. . 2. Benches to be placed on the campus. This is an important item for the pleasure of summer students and faculty who came to the cempus to enjoy the activities of the playground. The cost of this item has also been set out on a separate sheete 3. Enlargement of gymnasium and pleyground facilities. We plan to throw the gymnesium open, both floors, for indoor —— end to increase the play facilities out of doorse 4. I am also including a recommendation for two large master fans to be used in the ballroom of the Union Building for partiese The question of a place to store the archery equipment, which is quite cumbersome, might be solved by the construction of a small storage building, which would cost approximately $50. I am also in- cluding en item for the construction of picnic luncheon tables and necessary outbuildingse The lumber for these could come from the de- eaying handball courts south of the gymmasium which will soon have to be replacede I feel that all of these items are very important for the develop= ment of a recreational program for Sumer Session studentse Respectfully submitted, Director of Physical Education, Varsity Basketball Coacho DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROPOSED BUDGET FOR 1939 SUMMER SESSION t-~ a “ Forrest Ce Allene eee ec eer eceeecese cc & $800 (full-time teaching load = 8 hrse = and directing recreation; or 5/8 time teaching load, with 3 hrs. for directing recreatione) Wein Be UU 6b se Ke Chee ese ws a BT (5/8 time teaching) Women Tiistrueter 4 sé se te tee tte ce ee 6 oe ow HIS (3/4 time teaching) Women Assistant (parttime) oe@eeeeeeeneee @ $150™% : j — : | P Assistance for Men and Women e « « eVe eo ee we eo 0 © * $135. My dear Dr. Alien: In thinking over practical courses fer these tonchers in service who will be here and who will cane to the summer session if they can get such omurses, will it be pessible to include the following? I. Playground Activities far the Elementary School. This course should deal with the play program fran the classroom teachers' stenipoint since she so often is the one +o carry it on. Dear Sire: I desire te make certain recommendetions and sugzestions for the reerestion progrem for the summer of 1940. The success of last summer's recrestional program is, I believe, evidence that there ie much merit in «a welleorgenized program for the summer students. Favorable comment has come to us from many sources on this feature of the Summer Session. Our reletions with Professor Chandler in this con-ection were especially pleasings Me was co- operative end sympathetic at «11 times with our programe The ex= pense of the entire recreational program last summer wes increased by a trebling of the use of the swimming pool by men and women, and alse co-recreational groups, for beth white end colored students. le Flood lights for tho quadrangleescessesseeeeee¥ 150000 Last yeer we were allowed §145.00 for the installation of flood lights over the playgrounds We hed just helf es many lights as we would desire, and for thet roeson we ere asking for $150.00 for additional lights. 2. Additional benches for resting spots on the quade PENC lGccecececeeseswscecseessesssesecesseres os£100,00 Elderly people and families use these shady spot retreats both afternoons and eveningse Our request for benches for lest summer wes nearly €200,00, The amount ellowed us was $100.00, and in order to fill our needs for this item we are requesting £100.00 ad¢itional. Meny persons who desire to escape the heat of their — aperteents or rooms come to the pleyground in the evenings just to sit and wateh others at gemes. Meany times mothers bring their ahildren while the fathers ore studying et the library. In this connection, I might ad’ thet we did not limit our play- ground fecilities last summer to only Summer Session students and their families. ‘The clase in Community Recreation supervised games in the evenings, and many townspeople came to the hill to enjoy the sotivities. Supervision wes provided for the little folks who played in the sandpile, on the monkey maze, the swingS, and teeter=tetters. This was a great service to the parents who came to enjoy the concerts and other entertainment on the hill+ COD. This would tnvolwe an increase in the astivity fee, but would provide funds thet sould be utilized in the recreational programe I believe the students would be very enthusiastic about it.
