Dear Sire:

I desire te make certain recommendetions and sugzestions
for the reerestion progrem for the summer of 1940. The success of
last summer's recrestional program is, I believe, evidence that
there ie much merit in «a welleorgenized program for the summer
students. Favorable comment has come to us from many sources on
this feature of the Summer Session. Our reletions with Professor
Chandler in this con-ection were especially pleasings Me was co-
operative end sympathetic at «11 times with our programe The ex=
pense of the entire recreational program last summer wes increased
by a trebling of the use of the swimming pool by men and women,
and alse co-recreational groups, for beth white end colored students.

Last yeer we were allowed §145.00 for the installation of flood
lights over the playgrounds We hed just helf es many lights as
we would desire, and for thet roeson we ere asking for $150.00
for additional lights.

2. Additional benches for resting spots on the quade

Elderly people and families use these shady spot retreats both
afternoons and eveningse Our request for benches for lest summer
wes nearly €200,00, The amount ellowed us was $100.00, and in
order to fill our needs for this item we are requesting £100.00
ad¢itional. Meny persons who desire to escape the heat of their —
aperteents or rooms come to the pleyground in the evenings just to
sit and wateh others at gemes. Meany times mothers bring their
ahildren while the fathers ore studying et the library.

In this connection, I might ad’ thet we did not limit our play-
ground fecilities last summer to only Summer Session students

and their families. ‘The clase in Community Recreation supervised
games in the evenings, and many townspeople came to the hill to
enjoy the sotivities. Supervision wes provided for the little
