Lane merely meets his average dur-
ing tournament play he will close
out with 56 charities for his tour-
ney career, or nine more than
Johnson canned during his three-
year duty.

Another four-year hand, Kansas
State forward Jim Smith also
threatens the single-tournament
record. He has dropped 43 in five
games for an 8.6 average. And
isince becoming a regular over the
/last three games, he has accounted
for 32 of this total. During this
span he has gone to the line 44

Smith Has Chance

This is an average chance of
slightly more than 11 times per
|game. Since Smith is traveling at
‘a 75-percent accuracy pace, it is
‘not difficult to see that he will vie
seriously with Lane in shooting at
Diercks’ record. Even Johnson’s|
career standard is within reach
even though Smith has netted only
21 tosses during his previous nine
games of tournament action.

Too, Smith has notched 13 throws
twice to date, in a single game,
against Wyoming and Washington,
thus brushing the present one-game}
tourney mark of 14 held jointly by
Kansas State’s Dick Knsotman
(1952) and Kansas’ Bill Brainard

The team free throw mark for;
one game already has been _bet-
tered twice. Kansas nailed 38 in
its 100-72 win over Rice December
18. Oklahoma hit 37 in a 79-86 loss
to Baylor December 14.

Under team records even Stan-
ford’s single-game high of 103
points, scored in a rules experi-
ment game against Iowa State in
1951, is not safe, Kansas and Iowa
State both have been at the cen-
tury mark in pre-meet games.

Trio May Top 100

Only three performers, two of
them four-year men, are conceded
a chance of cracking the tourney’s
100-point career scoring elite. And!
elite is the correct word, for only|
12 men have achieved that bracket!
to date. Roughly, this is only 1 per-
cent of the conference players who
have taken part in eight previous
meets. Guest team personnel is not/
included since their one-year stands
eliminate a career chance of three
or four tourneys.
