Dear Dr. Allen: Mr. Bob Raugh who is football and track coach in the Colby High School and a darn good one, tells me he is interested in getting some sort of a part time job at the University and at the same time work on his Master's degree. Bob is a wonderful fellow and has been a very successful coach here. He came to us from Nebraska University and during his four years in Colby has won our league 3 times, tied for 2nd place one in football. This year his first as a track coach, he lost the league meet but won the regional at Scott City. Bob has a wonderful personality, gets along famously with boys and he really puts something into his teams, He isn't especially one who drives the boys but he puts his stuff across, and incidentally I might say he really has something in football, knows a lot of plays and how to execute them. I don't know exactly what kind of a job he wants, but as I heard he might see you, I am taking the liberty of writing you to personally testify that Bob Raugh is a good guy personally, has personality and certainly knows how to coach. Allen Director of Fhysical Zducation University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Yesterday I read of the resignation of Mr. Begroot from the Department of Physical Edueation. mt Could you at this time give me any information relative to this position or if one will exist for the comming year. I am a graduate of Ottawa University, graduating in 1927. Since that time I have completed the Masters and approx- imately half of the Doetorate in Fhysical Education at the University of Iowa. I have coached athletics and taught Physical Education in two Kansas high schools. Four years ago I became the director and supervisor of Physical Education in the Chanute schools. My work here has also ineluded teaching Playground Supervision, fersonal and Community Hygiene and Sports and Recreation in the Junior College. If the position exists and you feel that my application is of interest,I would be glad to make a personal applie- ation in the next few days before returning to the University of Iowa for the summer session. a. io oT R hl no PV ' Irvington, Calif. May 31,1941. Des Fs Ce Allen Dir. of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr. Allen: Please consider this letter as my application for the position vacated by Mr. De Groot at your university. Mr. De Groot in- formed me last night that he had recommended me as a possible candidate for his position and I am taking this opportunity to indicate my interest in that regard. I am sincerely interested in physical education as a career and this opportunity, if realized, will enable me to further my aspirations toward this end. I have what is considered by many a strong background in the theory and practice of both physical education and recreation as gained under lir. D.S. De Groot at San Jose State College. As Director of Physical Education, Mr. De Groot raised the physical education curriculum standards at that school from relative mediocrity to a level considered second to none here on the coast. Feeling weak in the health and hygiene part of our work, I decided to supplement this weakness by attendance at Stanford University, a school long noted for its training in these fields. Working towards my masterts degree, I completed approximately fifty units at Stanford. I do not have my degree as yet but have completed all of the academic courses required and have only the writing of the thesis to accomplish. Aside from eighteen units of practice teaching, I have gained practiéal experience in two private schools and one public school all on the secondary level. I have achieved some success in the guidance and counseling of students during my experience as a teacher and this fact together with my athietic experience and travel will, I hope, qualify me for your consideration. | It is my opinion that successful teaching of professional courses in physical education is dependent upon a practical experience in this field gained in each of the lower levels of education. Further, I believe that any advanced teaching should be preceded by a wide variety of individual experiences as might be gained from life itself as well as in formalized educational situations. In this regard I refer to my experience as gained from working my way through school as a chemist in a cannery and also to some traveling which has taken me from coast to coast a number of times, numerous trips to both Canada and liexico, and three trips to the Hawaiian Islands. My interest in physical education was undoubtedly founded on whole-hearted participation in athletics while still in high school. Following an extensive sports program in college my interest has only been ineréSed with the years in contact with this phase of the work of the physical educator. May I say that I hope this letter has given you some insight as to my character, personality, and experience. I will be only too glad to supply you with whatever information regarding my- self I may have failed to mention. Should you be interested in learning something of my ability as a student those records, together with my recommendations, are on file in the Appoint- ment Office at Stanford University. I am enclosing a stamped envelope for your convenience in seeking information about me. Hoping that I may receive your consideration for this position, I am Sincerely your ‘sy Clyde V6orhees CITY SCHOOLS D. E. WOLGAST, SUPERINTENDENT MARYSVILLE, KANSAS dune 5S, i941 oP. F. 0. Ajien University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Mr. Allen: Mr. Floyd Hanson, applying for a position of coach of Athletics in the Marysville High School, refers to you. Will you please give me a frank statement of your opinion of his quali- fications concerning his preparation, ability to teach and to manage, degree of good will he secures from boys and de- sirability as a member of a corps of teachers? How do you rank him? Is he a leader of boys and does he exert the right in- fluence? How successful has he been as a coach? Will you not give me just such in- formation as you would want under similar circumstances? Thanking you in advance for the desired information, I an Sincerely yours, June lOth, 1941 Mr. Dewey Wolgast Superintendant of Schools Marysville, Sansas Dear Dewey: Our commencement has interfered with a more prompt reply to your letter regarding Floyd Hanson. Frankness is always a virtue even though it might interfere in your desire to help an individual that you wish to help. I'm very fond of Floyd Hanson and his wife. 1 worked with Floyd in his effort’ to secure the Sabetha position. I understand that he was not wholly satis- factory. His greatest shortcoming was the fact that he did . not mix with the towns people. I understand that he had no bad habits and was failry successful with the boys but he did not engender a loyal following. If he is an applicant for the head coaching position at your school, I'm wondering if this position might not prove. too difficult for him there. I certainly would not want to recommend someone to you who might fail. We have some highly successful coaches such as Carney Smith at Paola; Paul Masoner at Garnet; Forrest Hardacre at SmithCenter, and Dave Shirk at Augusta. If you're interested in any of these young men or if you desire further information on Floyd Hanson, I will be very happy to furnish the same. Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education and Recreation-Varsity Basketball and - ‘Baseball Coach. FCA:re June 10th, 1941 Dear Dewey: Realize that I am a little delinquent © in enswering your letter regarding Floyd Hanson but finel exams and all of these things demand attention at this time of the- year. After Henson came to us from C. of E. he hed a bad year scholesticglly, but after that he found himself end made a very good record as a student. ‘When he left here a couple of years ago, I had a great deal of confidence in him. I thought he would be able to fit into the Sabetha situation in a fine manner and recommended him highly. 1 understand though that he has not been too successful, How uuch is his fault I am not prepared to sey. The fact remains that he apperently did mot fit into the situation as well as we thought he could. For this reason, I would feel reluctant to recommend him for e nob as large as Maryville. Henson has many fine qualities and I am sure that after a few bumps will make a good coach, but that of course razains for the future. If I can furnish eny additional information regarding Manson I shall be pleased — to do 80. Kindest regards, I an, Sincerely yours 5427 West 64th Street Chicego, Illinois June 13, 1941 Mr. Forrest C. I was pleased to hear from you and wish to assure you that I really do want to attend Kansas University this fall to do my graduate work. The positiow you are trying to work out for me sounds good and I certainly appreciate your efforts and interest in me. I had a nice visit with Mr. Henry while in Lawrence, but he could not give me much encouragement at that time other than that he would like to help me. I believe he feels the responsibility of giving first consideration to boys who have completed competition at K. U. but have not graduated. He did tell me, however, that he would keep me in mind and give me every consideration. I am sorry the money angle has to be considered so closely, but recent expenditures in our faihily have made it impossible for us to save enough to see us through without some work to aid us finan- cially. I believe if we could earn $1,000 we could get by. I have done some officiating in the past, and am sure that if I could get started there in eastern Kansas, I could pick up quite a bit.
