Kansas hes won too many championships to be popular with the group, - it is just human nature and I can't help it. I imagine I would have beon exactly like that if I was on the other side of the fence. So I must be rather discreet, and many times we get the worst of the bergein tetine on the winning side, But that is the pemaity we pay for being out in front and {¢ will elweys be thus. e: That would be your siendindials to the possibility of my deleying writing the little broekure for under tho conditions? a will . be happy to. mene; from rene , , Vory coréfally yours, PCAAH : | Director of Physical Education. zs Encl. ee : < October 11, 1937. Allen University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, Dear Mr. Allen: Enclosed find one of our new folders. You probably will have some suggestions to add to this and perhaps some criticism. We would appreciate any suggestions you have and in our next printing will include the correctionse Yours very truly, REK/e THE BASK-O-LITE C06 ire Senet ees BASK-O-LITE Meets Standard Specifications Bask-O-Lite has a ring and net of the traditional type. Seven vertical arms twelve inches in length extend below the basket ring to a second ring slightly smaller than the one at the top. At the bottom of the basket there is a trip device which operates a time switch. When the ball goes through the basket, three lights flash on for a period of two seconds. One light is placed directly behind the basket which illum- inates the ball as it goes through, the other two lights are suspended above the backboard. These lights are cylindrical in shape with the word “GOAL” on three sides. They are placed twelve inches above the backboard so that they are easily visible from any part of the gymnasium when a goal is made. Bask-O-Lite has a much greater potential strength than the conventional type basket. It is neat in appearance and fool-proof. BASK-O-LITE IS REASON- ABLY PRICED. Spectators . . Players . . Officials are enthusiastic about BASK-O-LITE .. . Bask-O-Lite increases visibility, illuminates the ball as it goes through the goal and is a wonderful help to those whose eyesight is not perfect as there can be no doubt when a goal is made. It eliminates arguments between fans. Itis a necessity to those behind the backboards and in the far parts of the gymnasium. Players say, “The goal is more rigid, it always looks the same and the net does not shrink or stretch but stays in the same position.’ Officials say, “Score keeper knows immediately when goal is made, the referee has more freedom to watch players when a goal is attempted, the ball cannot land in net on top of basket and it adds color to the gamc.” : Recommendations are coming from far and near... Here are a few: “The new electric basketball goal has great possibilities. Due to the speed of the game, impaired vision, and poor location of some seats, a certain percentage of the fans are not sure when goals are scored. This new basket will completely cure that difficulty. It should be particularly helpful to the game when played before large crowds. It will also add color to the game.” (Signed) Everett S. DEAN, Basketball Coach, Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. “Your goal recording device, the Bask-O-Lite, has been used experimentally in this locality. I have been greatly interested in the development of this type of basket through the last several years. You seem to have perfected it so that it is serviceable and attractive in ap- pearance. Wherever it has been tried in this locality it has been received with considerable interest and has been commented upon favorably. Members of our state basketball com- mittee are planning to use it in part of their games this season. I have no doubt that a school could play an exhibition game with these baskets and with proper advertising meet much of the cost of installation through increased attendance.” (Signed) H. V. Porter, Assistant Manager, Illinois High School Athletic Association, 11 So. LaSalle St., Chicago, Ill. “Your Bask-O-Lite basketball basket is being used in my coaching school at Butler this year. I have used it in some games in the Field House and it has been well received by coaches, fans and players. It is especially good for spectators who have to sit behind the goals and in distant parts of large gymnasiums.” ; ; (Signed) Pau D. H1nxte, Athletic Director, Butler University, Indianapolis, Ind. Incidents like this could never happen with BASK-O-LITE .. . Excerpt from an article in Courier-Journal, Louisville, Ky., February 8, 1936. MALE DEFEATS MANUAL 25-21, OR MAYBE 23-21? “The full story never will be told, and the patrons, who numbered more than 1,200 will continue to ask these questions: Did the goal Hamilton tossed when Davis was called for his fourth foul go in the basket or not, and was the score 23 or 25 to 21?” From an Associated Press article to Courier-Journal, December 31, 1935. WINNER OF IRISH-NORTHWESTERN TILT IN DOUBT, 20-20? “When the final gun was fired, the scoreboard proclaimed Northwestern the winner 20 to 19. The official score books kept by the student managers of the teams gave the same version. However, the books of every sports writer in the pressbox had ita 20-20 tie. The point of difference was that Raymond Meyer of Chicago, Notre Dame forward, was credited with only one success- ful free throw attempt in the student managers’ tallies, while the writers, to a man, credited him with two.” “Down with the Old .. Up with the NEW!” Bask-O-Lite is the greatest improvement to the game since basket- ball started. It is modern equipment and adds color to the game. You will get the brand of shooting you have always desired be- cause the goal is more rigid, looks bigger and always stays in the same position. Depend upon this great new goal to add zest and glamour to the game and to increase your attendance. It is built from selected materials by skilled workers and presents new and unusual features that make it outstanding. BASK-O-LITE IS THE YEAR’S BIGGEST NEWS. TURN IT TO YOUR OWN ADVANTAGE. Write . . I assure you there has been no intent in overlooking your kind letter of October 14th. It certainly was nice of yourto write us the way you did regarding the injury to one of our men in the Minne- sota game. I am happy to inform you that he is now making rapid progress and will soon be out of the hospital and back in school. It was necessary to operate to remove a blood elot and as soon as this operation was performed he started to improve very rapidly. His parents have certainly been good sports and good soldiers all the way through this ordeal and have been in a most cooperative frame of mind. The arrangements for the basketball coaches meet- ing Saturday, December 4th is entirely satisfactory with me. I just hope that we will be able to meet at the hour set and not have so much delay in getting under way as has been in evidence in the past. In regard to the Bask-O-Lite goals, I would like to reserve my opinion on these until our meeting in December. If the other coaches in the conference are in accordance about these goals, I assure you I would not have any objection to the goal. At the present writing I have not had any time to give to basketball and would be guided by what the other men decided to do. » In regard to the candle power of light necessary for taking motion pictures, this matter has been left in the hands of Mr. Selleck.
