Forrest ©. Allen, Director Physical Education, Kansas University, Lawrence, Kansas Dear Sir, I am writing to investigate a reported vacancy in your department. I am particularly interested in the teaching of aquatic sports and I have heard that the vacancy created in your department in September has not yet been filled. I feel fully qualified to fill such a position as I specialized in that field in working for a Master's degree at the University of Southern California and have taught and coached the sport for many years. As a coach I have developed numerous sectional champions and one National A.A.U. Junior champion. As a teacher I have directed the aquatic program at North Texas State Teachers College for the past two summers. Ny background in Physical Education is broad and my contributions would not necessarily be limited to one sport. Alien University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: The war is compelling us to make some changes on our staff as our entire male student body is under the direction of the military command with permanent officers supplied by the Canadian Militia. Of course, as a result almost our entire competitive programme has had to be cancelled. Except for some intramural work which we are still trying to keep alive, almost all other activities have ceased and as we look forward into next year, we fear that even less time can be given by the students for anything outside their Officers! Training Corps. Due to financial stringency, the University is compelled to reduce to the absolute minimum the members of our starf. Eight years ago Lewis H. Davies came to us as a student instructor and com- pleted his Master's work in two years. Since that time he has continued on with us as 4 full time member of the staff. As a basketball coach and as a track coach, we have never had his equal and as an executive in the office, I have never had an assistant who is so capabte in organizing our work. Mr. Davies is married. Has a delight- ful wife who has won the hearts of our people here. They have one child. We regret very much that it is necessary for us to sever our relationship with them. DP. Vs GC. Allen: ee I am writing, hoping that through some of your channels, you may be able to know of an opening for Lew in any of these eapacities. I think his finest piece of work is in basketball. He has always had a winning team, always been able to train his men with the highest ideals of sportsmanship and they have ever been a eredit to the University. I would appreciate it very much if you could help Lew in any way to find a situation. He is worthy of a much more responsible job than he had here and I eannot recommend him too highly for your consideration. We hope, however, that he will stay with us until the end of the academic year but if an, opening should come before that time, we would release him if it was to his benefit to accept a position.
