Stouffer, Chairman, Graduate Research Comnittes, University of Kansas. ~ ~ Dear Dean Stouffer: Thank you for your mimeographed letter to the faculty regarding a possible budget for assistance to research projects of members of the faculty. I have polled ow group and at present we have no one, it seems, who has had time enough to dwell on possible research work. We are hoping when things get normal again that some of our men, especially Major E. R. Elbel who is in the School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Field, Texas, may have some defin- ite contributions. And too, when things do get normal, most of us will have time at least to think of possible interesting re- , search — . Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, FCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS Lawrence ieee GRADUATE SCHOOL May 18, 1945 TO MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY: The University budget for 1945-1946 includes the usual item for assistance to research projects of members of the Faculty. The Re- search Committee plans to give early consideration to the allotment of the fund and is, therefore, asking that requests for grants be submit- ted promptly. The item in the budget is entirely from the maintenance fund; consequently, grants cannot be made involving the direct payment of sal- aries or wages. It is very important that each request be carefully considered before being submitted, It is altogether probable that the total amount requested for even the very worthy projects cannot be granted. It would be helpful to the Committee if each person submitting a request were to obtain the endorsement in writing of the chairman of his department. With each application there should be furnished as complete and aS accurate information as possible on the following points: 1, Nature of the project and probable results to be obtained. 2. its present state of completion, 3, Total amount necessary during 1945-46 from the Research Fund and specific purposes for which each portion of the sum is to be used. 4. Probable amount necessary from the fund in future years in order to complete the project. Members of the Faculty who wish to apply for grants should submit their requests in writing by June 1, 1945. Very sincerely yours, E. B. STOUFFER, Chairman Graduate Research Committee sos Any amount remaining from previous grants on projects which are now terminated should be returned to the Graduate Research Fund for use during the coming year. It just ocourred to me that I did not have you on the mailing list for our Jayhawk Rebounds. We call this “Jayhawk Rebounis” because we rebound from the backboard, and our boys are rebounding from the Japanazis. They have already rebounded from the krauts, so the slit-eyes are the next ones. Skidmore suggested that I might like to have dinner with you and some of your friends this Thursday when you come to speak to the graduating classes at Beattie and Summerfiield, I certainly would like to be with you, but last week I received the sincere greetings of Presi- dent Truman together with an invitation to report to Ft. Leavenworth on Thursday, May 17, for a pre- induction examination on Friday, May 18. I went through this same routine last year in March, and at that time they let me stay from Friday until Mon- day evening. At that time I guess my engine was a little too strong for my old worn out chassis; or at any rate they said my blood pressure was a little high. On top of my absence, your # 2 fan in Marysville, my father, is in Chicago on his vacation. Consequently, neither of us can extend personal greetings to you this week. I sincerely regret this state of affairs, but I guess I had better heed Uncle's call. My son John is growing fast. He is almost three now and as full of questions as he can be. He shows a great interest in watching football, basketball, and track meets. Thanks to his mother, I am sure he has a lot more imagination than his father has. We enjoy him a great deal. I don't care much for the sea but it is a welcome change. While I am overseas and away fppm home I like to keep moving. I am now stationed aboard and LST that is operating out of England. I have-already made several trips to the continent trying to keep some of the boys up front supplied with a Bew of the things they need. I have already become the Welfare and Rec. and Education officer. I have a good softball team and we get quite a lob of opportunity to play when we are in port. fn fact, we have a game scheduled for this afternoor and I am going to hurry this letter a little to be able to make the game. Got interested bunch of boys and that is a good sign. (Thé*ship, with her officers and men, has been overseas for two years now, That is too long but they have stood up well under the strain of three invasions in the mediterranean and Normandy. At least they know what the score is and that means a lot. This is just going to be just a note because 1 have a ball game to play and I think that I could do myself and a lot of kids a lot of good by getting off this metal deck for a few hours.
