This letter has arrived in plenty of time for the use I had contemplated. I know that you are very busy with the basketball team, and I am also aware that my request was made at one of the very busiest times of the year. As a matter of fact, for that very reason and also because I had never competed directly under you or had the benefit of your coaching ability, I hesitated to call upon you for this letter, but could think of no other party who could write a letter which would be as great a benefit to me as would a letter from you, I note however, that you have neglected to sign the letter, no doubt due to the fact that you were in a hurry and that you did sign the letter which accompanied the enclosure, so I am enclosing the letter for your signature. LI am sure this letter will be of great value to me when I go before the draft for induction, and I am greatly indebted to you for the same, Thanking you for your great favor in this matter and with kindest regards, I am Yours truly, aie f "pllrkplallatact™ Enc, P. So far as I have been able to contact the members of the Committee, I find the canvass has been made promptly and the results have been all we could hope for. Doubtless you have found quite a few conflicts between the work of our Committee ani the other Committees on the Drive. Probably most of these are unavoidable. However, the main point is to sell bonds; to whom the credit goes is a minor matter. _ Jf you have some prospects who have money in the bank and may want to use it later, don’t overlook the possibility of the 7/8 Per Cent Bonds. If purchased and kept for 60 days or more, they will materially help war finances. ; Many of the members have turned in their cards and reported progress. Allen Varsity Basketball Coach . Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allens: I think the time is approaching when it would be well for men in my position to start making some plans for military service, The local draft board in Paola is taking pre-Pearl Harbor fathers now, as are other draft boards throughout Kansas. I am very much interested in a branch of the Navy designated Spec- ialist A Athletics. Perhaps you are familiar with this. The only possibility of getting into the branch, however, is through énlisting or volunteering through your draft board. By reason of my color perception defect it is my intention to take a pre- induction physical examination at Leavenworth, at which time it will be possible for me to find out whether or not I could be accepted by any branch of the Navy, and if I should be acceptable for Naval service I would request assignment to Specialist A Athletics at which time I would like very much to have a letter from you. ; To refresh your recollection a bit, I played on the '37, '38 and '39 football team, being captain of the '359 team, and also worked as assistant Freshman football coach in the fall of 140 and part of '41. I also participated in track in 'Z7, was a representative on the Men's Student Council from the Law, Med- icine and Graduate School, President of my second year law class and a member of the Dean's Honor Roll while in College. I know that you have been called upon to write many letters of this nature recently and will know exactly what I want. I think one of the most important features of the letter would be to stress the fact that I have had experience as a coach while assisting with the Freshman football team at the University. Please address this letter to the Officer in Charge, United States Naval Reserve, Ft. Leavenworth Reception Center, Leavenworth, Kansas, and then send it to me at Paola. Allen Director of Physical Education Robinson Gym University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen, I trust you are well and enjoying an eventful basket ball season. I recently read in the Wichita papers that you are expected to have another powerful squad this year. We have a pretty fair aggregation here at Boeing, and I am wondering if we could interest you in a game in spite of your already heavy schedule. : Our team is made up of fairly large players; Charlie Halbert, who played for West Texas Teachers, is 6'9" tall and is as good as any boy his size. We have another boy who is 66", and about four boys ranging from 6*2" to 6'4" in height. We finished last years season by beating Phillips 66 at Bartlesville just a week before they went to Denver and won the National. We have three games scheduled with Phillips 66 again this year, two or three games with the Hutchinson Navy Base, and several other service teams besides our regular league games here in Wichita. George Gardner is our coachsand he said he would like very much to have a game with you if it could be arranged. He was thinking, in particular, of a Red Cross Benefit game here in Wichita, which, of course, would guarantee your expenses. 1 would appreciate hearing from you regarding this matter, and if you are interested please let me know of any open dates you have. Dr. Allen, I am also writing to you regarding my basket ball safety glasses. I need to have the strength of my lenses increas- ed and I have forgotten the name of the company who manufacturers them. Would you please send me the necessary information concern- ing the optical company. I would surely like to come back and pay a visit to K.U. this winter, but I am afraid my working schedule will not permit that. Give my regards to Dean and the fellows, and my best wishes for a successful season this year. Sincerely yours, “ Marvin Sollenberger MS: jk December 8, 1943. Mra. H. |’.
