Dear Dr. Allens:

I think the time is approaching when it would be well
for men in my position to start making some plans for military
service,

The local draft board in Paola is taking pre-Pearl Harbor
fathers now, as are other draft boards throughout Kansas. I
am very much interested in a branch of the Navy designated Spec-
ialist A Athletics. Perhaps you are familiar with this. The
only possibility of getting into the branch, however, is through
énlisting or volunteering through your draft board. By reason
of my color perception defect it is my intention to take a pre-
induction physical examination at Leavenworth, at which time it
will be possible for me to find out whether or not I could be
accepted by any branch of the Navy, and if I should be acceptable
for Naval service I would request assignment to Specialist A
Athletics at which time I would like very much to have a letter
from you. ;

To refresh your recollection a bit, I played on the '37,
'38 and '39 football team, being captain of the '359 team, and
also worked as assistant Freshman football coach in the fall of
140 and part of '41. I also participated in track in 'Z7, was
a representative on the Men's Student Council from the Law, Med-
icine and Graduate School, President of my second year law class
and a member of the Dean's Honor Roll while in College.

I know that you have been called upon to write many letters
of this nature recently and will know exactly what I want.

I think one of the most important features of the letter
would be to stress the fact that I have had experience as a coach
while assisting with the Freshman football team at the University.

Please address this letter to the Officer in Charge,

United States Naval Reserve, Ft. Leavenworth Reception Center,
Leavenworth, Kansas, and then send it to me at Paola.
