It mentioned you favorably and, of course, I swelled with pride in having known you and known your wonderful work in Ke Ue Through the Topeka Capital, I have followed your work again this yeare I am very proud of your wonderful team. Tes-= day night of this week in a gym at the State Prison at London, Ohio, I saw an exceedingly interesting game between the prison team and a team from Plain City, Ohio. They are part of a 10-team league. These 2 teams had tied for first place, but the visiting team won the gam by a small margin. The visiting team have played together ever since they were in highschool, about four years agoOe One of this team is a colored player who was on the all-Chio Five when in highschoole IncidentfZally, about 50 visitors were ad= mitted to the seats which surround the basketball floor. After all visitors were seated, 600 prisoners were marched into the gym and were likewise seated. Although this event was at night, this could be handled because from the dormitories to the gym, prison= ers are always behind locked doors and barred windows and security can be maintainedy — Ha, bye ff eer, flow ug I have fine cooperation from the Governor and the Commissioners of Welfare under whom I work in Kentucky. I have five correctional institutions under my supervisione I am also Director of the Division of Probation and Parole in this state, but should get very little credit for this work as it is, of necessity, directed and managed mostly by an assistant. Kentucky has what I call a thoroughly organized system for what I call probation and parole management with twenty~six field officers constantly investigating Pe Ae Page 2 2=23=46 © and reporting on parolees, both from the courts and the institut- ionse In some other respects, Kentucky's correctional institutions are much behind what might be called normal progress in correct= ional work. He desires to take Chemical ingineering. I am writing you and request that you advise me the proceedure necessary to enroll at Lawrence. Knowing of the possible restrictions on “out of state" students, I de- sire to get his name in immediately. Fred is 6'-4" tall, weighs about 188 lbs., and is on the basket- ball squad at Southwest. To date he has not played in a single game but he has never missed a practice. He just took up basketball this year. He plays on our church team and has developed remarkably in the last few monthse His coach is Frank Wheat, a former Missouri player, whom I'm sure you know, Both Frank and Ken Yunker, another Missouri man, have told me they felt he had very good prospects of developing into a good player and have tried to persuade me to send him to Columbia, but neither his mother nor myself desire to send him to Missouri. He wants to go to Ke Use and frankly he eats, drinks and talks nothing but basketball. He has made his letter in swimming and won't go out this year because of it’s interfering with his basketball, I believe he could easily make another swimming letter but he prefers to be on the basketball squad where he plays every practice day. I assure you it will be a great pleasure. I.enjoyed your fine letter of Yctober 8 and it was pleasnatly received. Yes, Kansas did Have the ball on the Iowa State two. yard line when the game ended but I want to tell you, Mitt, that I saw some of the most putred quarterbacking on Idwa State's part that I have. ever witnessed. Iowa State practically gave the game to Kansese Repeatedly they made short and flat passes just over the line when they were on their own seveh or ten yard line. They had the game sewed-up 13-7 and gave us one score and tried to give us another and we came very nearly accepting it. Ernie Quigley told me this morning that they did the same thing against Missouri. With a score 7-6 in favor of Iowa State they plunged for a fourth down on their own forty yard liné and Missouri took the ball and scored. Kansas is coming along splendidly and will give Oklahoma a good game. However, Lt believe Oklahoma has, -t00 much power and Oklahoma is tough to beat at Norman. ‘I will do the best I can to get vou a warm-up and size 34 pair of pants. I will send them out this week.
