Allen 9 December 1944 Director of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Doc: I want to thank you for your consideretion and trouble in sending me your book. Isolated as we are up here there were no copies in stock at any of the places that we trade. The copy that I used to own has long since disappeared. Our basketball teem is not too red hot as yet but we do have poss- ibilities. To date we have beaten Gonzaga University and McCawe General Hospital. This coming week we play University of Ideho and Geiger Field. What we really need is two guards. If we can dig them up somewhere we might stand a chance against a little heavier competition. \ Qur Air Force is divided into four districts. We are in the northern district. The winners of the four districts play off in / San Francisco and the winner there represents the Air Force in a / National Tournament in New York, on March 15th. The joker in getting up a good team lies in the fact that these men must do all of their practicing and playing after they have finished their days work. Some of the boys work as high as twelve and sixteen hours at a time so vou can see that they‘are tired when they come out to practice. We find however that if they do come out after they get off work they are really sold on the game, and they are swell to work with. We have a twelve team int@hural league running now and we find a few boys that way. We hafe to use all permanent party personnel because the combat crews have such a rigid training schedule. Our old transportation bugaboo that we had to contend with in Florida has smoothed out here. They fly us to our games in the big B-24's. In this way we can make a trip, play a game, and be back ready for work the next morning. If we are weathered in we heve a fifteen passenger car (like the one at Haskell) which we ride in. Thanks again for your courtesy. I enjoy reading about the boys in the “Rebounds”. Dear Dr. Alien, I wish to thank you for putting me on the "Rebound" mailing list. I enjoy reading it very much. I also should like to join with the many others in appreciation of the fine tribute paid T.P.. by you and his other friends. I think that I failed to mention in my last letter that) one of my good friends at my station in Hawaii was ga friend of yours. Lt. Commander "Rollie" Wi illiams, for- ‘mer basketball coach at Iowa U., was the athletic dir- ector at the Naval Air Station where I served for about 18 months. I got to know him fairly well-especially as a fishing companion-and he is certainly a fine gentleman. He was very well liked at the station, and many were the bull sessions which, more often than, not, would end with Rollie telling vasketball stories..especaklly about "Doc" Meanwell and Rollies playing days at Wisconsin. I could always "needle" him a little about that last pasting the boys from Mt. Oread gave him,but he was a grand sport about it. . The naval officer who had the room across from mine also knows you and you may remember him. He was Jim Wells, now a Lt.(j.g.) in the Navy, and formerly a sports broadcaster from Buffalo, N.¥.. Jim told me that he interviewed you on his program several times when Lyou_ Were traveling t through Buffalo. Again I Want to ~ thank you for putting me on the mail- ing list, md I want to-notify you of a change in address. I am still stateside, but the present address is Lt. James R. Surface, c/o General Delivery, Dana Point, Calif. Best of luck in the basketball season. Now that basket ball season is back, we aaa ae ens hold our own in the numerous "bull sessions" Sincerely, Jeruary 15, 1046. el Ens. F. R. Schultheis, 350138, U.S.S.1l.C.2. (L) 758, o/o Fleet Postoffice, San Francisco, Calif. Dear Prank: Yes, indeed, I do remember you. I spoke to Mrs. Hulteen when I looked at your name and said, “I know that fellow.” When I saw \ Philippines at the top of the page I thought the letter might be from some fellow I had never seen or heard from before. I often get such letters. But when I glanced at the first sentence and saw that you had been in my class I rather got a kick out of ite | When a fellow site at his desk and dictates a number of letters he glances at the name first, then hastily glances over the page, so that accowrted for my explanation in the preeeding paragraph. Yes, sir, you are correct. ‘The 27.5" ball is exactly 2" smaller - in circumference than the official ball should be. The soccer ball, you know, is only | 27", so they have almost switched a soccer ball on you. They stamp “official” on most everything. The high school ball is 29" in cirownference. The theory is that the —— of the boys are shorter than the college players. An official ball selis for about $16 or $17; but of course the mary would get it much less than that. > There was a time when the official basketball measured 32” in cirounference. As the ball was gradually reduced in sise, the skill in shooting became more apparent. The one-handed shooting is the direct result of the smaller ball. I certainly will be pleased when this clin is over so that you can come back and enjoy Mt. Oread with all the pleasantries, and with Kansas basketball thrown in ocoasionally for good measure. To keep you in tune with things we are putting you on the Jayhawk Rebounds mailing list - a letter that I try to get out every month to the boys in the service. With all good wishes, I am Sincerely yours, ae Director of Physical Education, FCA: AH Varsity Basketball Coach. Philippines 4 January 1944 Dear Mr. Allen, I doubt if you remember me but I was in your early- morning phys. cond. class in '43-44. I hate to bother you with such a trivial matter but I could think of no one better qualified than you to settle an argument about basketball. There are quite a few men on both sides of this argument about the size of an official collegiate basketball, in fact quite a lot of money was bet. On the ship we have a Wilson Official college grade basketball (measuring about 27.5 inches in circumference with the present air pressure) which is said by some to be too small to be official. The ball cost $6.46 and it seems illogical that Wilson would produce such a ball that would not meet "official" qualifications. Coulda you please straighten us out with a little information? : After the war I plan to return to the hill to com- plete credits for my degree, and I look forward to the time when I can sit down and watch some Kansas grade basketball.
