Allen Director of Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allens This is what you get for being so well known, The Kansas City Feed Club has a monthly dinner which is mainly attended by fellows in the feed business, but there are also a few grain men and millers who attend, making a total generally of about 100 men, Mr. Johnson of the Northwestern Miller and Mr. Chas. Dreyer are a committee who are assigned the task of getting a speaker for this dinner to be held at the Phillips Hotel on March 18th. These two gentlemen thought that I knew you well enough to ask that you speak to this group on March 18th, I doubt that I know you quite well enough to impose upon you to this extent, and please do not hesitate to ask to be excused if you are tired of speech making, for this is not my particular organization, and I am merely acting for the friends who have requested that I write you, They have selected the above date because they thoughl you would weet be here anyway to attend the Iowa State-Creighton Game, and they will be glad to have the dinner at 6:00 p.m., and allow you to leave whenever, or as early as you care to close your talk, They will gladly arrange the time for your convenience, Naturally, the first thought was of your talking on basketball, but will gladly listen to anything you have to say on any subject. As time is short, they have asked that you telephone me collect upon receipt of this letter, so that they will know promptly of your decision. @Asmasorry we could not have won against Oklahoma, but believe that you did your usual excellent job with the nice lot of boys this season, In closing, will say that you made quite a hit at the Rally Assembly the morning of that game from what I heard at the Gamma Phi House at dinner Friday night. In addition to this T eam coaching a Varsity beseball team and feel as if I am taking some time away from them. The state of Kansas does not provide traveling @XPENSOE, and since I drive my own Buick Posdmester and have to pay the expenses, I fine that the least I can possibly get along on is five cents per mile each weye I make no charge for edéresses given within our own ' gtates Therefore, if you cen stand the automobile traveling expenses I would be glad to speak to your athletic benquete Since my time schedule is so limited I find it necessary to use the automobile to _ go from place to place in order to keep up with ny teaching end my. cozching schedules If this is agreeable with you kindly stete the time of your benquet and its meeting place. E. COLE, Superintendent WM. BROWN, Grade Principal GAYLORD, - KANSAS Dr. F.C, Allen March 27, 1941 Director of Physical Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, Dear Dr, Allen: I received your letter of the 25th, to-day and wish to say that we will be glad to pay you 5¢ a mile each way out here to be with us at our Little Six Basketball League Ban- quet on Tuesday, April 15, I realize that your duties as coach of baseball as well as your other duties there at the university all call for a very heavy load on your part, I didn't know that you had the baseball load which rolled right in upon the completion of your reguhar basketball season, I appreciate your heavy responsibility and realize that it is a great sacrifice on your part to make so many of our high schools as a banquet speaker, But I also know that you mean very much to the basketball devotees of the state, All the high school boys out this way have heard of Phog Allen , many of them have digested your books on the cage game, and all of them will be delighted to have you around the banquet table, Now the route I suggested in my former letter will be the best since you are driving your Buick out, I refer to U.S,24 which you will have all the way from north of Lawrence a short way on out to about seven miles west of Downs, At that point that highway turns south to Osborne and there you take Kansas 9 on over here to Gaylord, good road all the way. My home town ia down there at Winchester and I have driven out here many times and find 24 the best and quickest route to drive, So come out loaded with your basketball lore and we'll try to give you the“glad hand® in good style. We get a lot of kick out of some of the sport items relative to your late prediction as to football's future but I'm sure most school men agree that football and horse racing are getting somewhat of the same savor in all too many ways. School and college athletics in general may ”eeqg a bit of negative acceleration for their good and for the best interest @h education in fact, Thanks a lot; we'll be waiting, Yours truly, «&, G& J.E.Cole, Supt. Orr | foe yz a a i C 4a : : f aD d sade Dear Dr, All en, & AA et = (zeae 4 / We are planning our annual Little Six Basketball League Banquet to be held here at Gaylord on or about April 15, It is the custom for the league winners to act as the host school and since Gaylord won the league championship it falls our lot to arrange for all particulars incidental to the event, Last year we had no out-of county speakers but this year it has been suggested to me by several school men and basketball fans that we endeavor to get a speaker who has had a wide experience as a coach of the sport, and all of them have suggested you as the first choice, I might explain that our league is made up of the following schools; Athol, Kirwin, Kensington, Cedar, Harlan, and Gaylord, These schools are all in Smith county except Kirwin which is in Phitlips county, Gaylord is at the south edge of Smith county twelve miles south-west of Smith Center, Now, Dr, Allen, if you find it possible to be with us at this time will you please advise me of the fact and also please state just what financial remuneration you would have to have for the trip? It will be necessary for us to meet such financial obligation by popular subscription and I would have to do a bit of "feeling out" of our commercial club and other supporters in order to know exactly what we could do from that angle, Gaylord is located on the Central Branch division of the Missouri Pacifie and rail facilities are poor as far as service direct from Lawrence is concerned, If wou can come and choose to travel by rail your best route would be via the Rock Island to Smith Center, Some of us would meet you there, If you should choose to drive I might say that it is about 200 miles from here to Topeka which would be too about 240 miles from Lawrence, The route would be U.S.24 until you get seven mibes west of Downs then K.9 on over here about fourteen miles, It is a paved , concrete and black top, all the way from Lawrence, Our league has some pretty good boys who are graduating this spring and some of them might be induced to attend college if we are able to induce them, We have a pretty nice boy here in our school, By that I mean a boy whom 1 believe is of college basket- ball caliber, He is a bit weak scholastically however, Kensington too has some very good boys, So please let me know if you would be able to be with us at about this time, We haven't set a definite date as yet but prefer to have our little grand finale in basketball right around April fifteenth, Please let me know just what you could come for also, We hope you will be able to be with us and let us in on your philosophy of the sport, Yours very truly, EE JEC; AB J.E.Cole, Supt.
