Dear Dr. Allen:

Acknowledging receipt of yours dated February 8th in reply
to my letter of the 7th inst.

The expense as outlined in your above mentioned letter is
very reasonable and is approved by the Board. Therefore, if it
fits in with your conveniences, March 24th will be fine, and you
may use any subject you desire as am sure you will be able to hold
the interest of our group with any message you have.

Our Club is made up of Railroad Freight Solicitors, Truck
Line Solicitors, Airway Representatives and Traffic Managers of the
larger industries, also a great many officials of the various rail-
roads officing in Kansas City.

The object of our Club is to promote closer relationship
between those interested in transportation and transmission problems.
We are the largest Club in Kansas City with a membership of over
550 and hold a great many affairs throughout the year such as
Spring and Fall Stag Smokers, Annual Pienic for members and families,
two dinner dances, Annual Dinner, usually in January when we have
installation of new officers and at Christmas time we take care of
four or five Orphan's and Children's Homes by way of a Christmas
tree at each Home with presents for each child (this is done yearly).

I give you all the above to acquaint yourself with the
Traffie Club of Kansas City. Am also enclosing a 1940 Roster.

At your convenience, shall appreciate confirmation as to
your appearance on that date; also, if you have a certain subject,
please advise me so I may be able to arrange my luncheon set-up
on our "News" sheet (copy enclosed). Will go to press March 17th

A long time ago, in our November 28 issue, we

said, quote: “The Hon. Mr. Peters has wrested High
10 and High 30 honors away from competitors for
the present, having 739 for three-game total and
280 for single came (both fioures include handi-
cap. a

Then in our last issue we very consistently gave
top honors to Paul Kirk with 275 and 687. We mod-
estly allotted second place to ourselves. Now that
ain’t right. “As any fool can plainly see,” Lil’ Abner
would say.

The season’s more than 6a over, and the
teams are primed for the home stretch. The leaders
have set the pace. Can they hold it? Can a dark
horse win? Will Mobilgas and Old American Re-
peat? This and other gruesome discoveries will be
revealed in our next issue. Buy it hot off the press!

- Wups! We’ve been reading too many continued
stories an’ it finally got us.

Anyhow, why don’t cha come out on Friday
nights to Cocked Hat an’ watch th’ boys?
The following members did not miss a Luncheon
during 1940: Glenn Gilbert, R. S. Holland, H. H.
Hull, L. C. Payne, H. T. Powell, E. A. Thomas, and
K. A. Trowbridge.

So let’s give a hand to these hundred-percenters
and a thought towards having more of ’em this

year.

THE FIRST LUNCHEON of the year, held Jan-
uary 27, was attended by 210 members and guests,
and was one of the best we’ve been to.

Mayor Gage, City Manager Cookingham, Chief
of Police Reed, and various other dignitaries had
Heber Powell flanked at the Speaker’s Table, but not
out-flanked; for it was Heber who was givin’ orders
when the colored boys moved the table to make way
for the fireworks.

And there were fireworks—both verbal and vis-
ual. Even the Speaker wished the Fire Department
had beén present. -

Thos. F. Kearney, Superintendent of Technical
and Record Division-of the Kansas City, Missouri,
Police Department, with the aid of a chemist from
his department, demonstrated various quaint little
ways arsonists and saboteurs have of burning and
destroying through the use of chemicals. His talk
could well be called fiery oratory, for it was punc-
tuated by explosions and bursts of flame.

R. T. Kingman and his Luncheon Committee are
to be complimented for the good food and the good
program. Ralph Holland and his Reception Com-
mittee were in there pitchin’; and Dean Smith
wound up the show with a humorous but very sin-
cere send-off for Bill Fernald, presenting Bill with
a traveling bag, in behalf of the Club.

Our DON’T-SAY-ANYTHING-ABOUT-IT-BUT-
CONFIDENTIALLY — Department: “Butch” Har-
ris, of the Entertainment Committee Harris’s, was
looking over the Municipal Auditorium the other
day with a critical eye. Wonder if Leland thinks it
would be big enough for the Traffic Club Smoker to
be held Fheruary 22!! There should be some an-
nouncements about the Smoker pretty soon. The
NEWS should have one next issue.

Seen in the Railway Exchange Building: K. T.
Mindemann and J. L. Brechin, of the Union Pacific,
getting their “long haul” in the elevator—from the
top floor to lobby; Fenton Dowling, GFA of the
“Katy,” showing his new DFA. Paul Lacy, around.
Paul comes up from Austin, Texas, and it is our
firm belief that the Texans are trying to annex Mis-
souri just like they did Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Bill Fernald, of the D&RGW, just promoted to a
General Agency for that line at Minneapolis; Steve
Lockwood succeeding Bill; and F. D. Lucas coming
from Salt Lake City to take Steve’s job.

Paul Carneck, from Minneapolis, succeeds Everett
Williams as General Agent for the SP here, Everett
going to Indianapolis.

George Batchelor tells us C. W. Nunn, recently
retired KCS Local Freight Agent at Kansas City,
was 72 years of age and had been with the KCS
here as Agent since 1918. J. A. Christian, former
General Agent for the KCS-L&A Lines at Joplin,

P. F. Connelly, new Great Northern TFA at Kan-
sas City, was President of the Sioux City Traffic.
Club for 1941.

M. P. Eckman, recently appointed GFA for the
Missouri Pacific Lines here, was already well-known
by many of our members who traveled to Omaha, as
“Mose” served that railroad in Omaha for several
years.

Elmer Greene, GFA for MK&C Truck Lines,
transferred to their Denver offices a few days ago,
and writes us that it’s mighty pretty up there. Come
to see us whenever you can, E. R.

Our sincere sympathy to Nick Frick, of the Erie,
whose wife, Mrs. Ruth Mary Frick, passed away on
January 20.

The Golden Gloves Tournament begins Monday,
February 10. This first night comes under the aus-
pices of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Mor-
ris Stern says he, Les Cox, Jack Nelson, and other
Traffic Club Members who are in the Junior Cham-
ber, have lots of tickets to sell, guaranteeing good
seats.

N. L. “Roy’’ Cook, Rock Island Freight Agent, is
seriously ill at St. Luke’s Hospital. Be sure to call
the hospital first should you contemplate a visit.

Paul Hewitt’s name was left off our sick list last
issue entirely through accident. Last reports were
that Paul was doing nicely and contemplated an
early return to work.

ruary meeting on the 11th, 6:15 P.M., St. Nicholas
Hotel. It will be Passenger Department Night.

Clarence Dick of the Alton-B&O, tells us the
Junior Traffic Club Inaugural Ball on Saturday
Night, February 1, was mighty fine. A total of 200
attended.

ord attendance and swell time at the Kansas City
Passenger Agents’ Annual Smoker February 3. But
doggone it, this News goes to press that same aft-
ernoon. However, we know th’ gang will prove us

least I can get along for would be 57 per mile each waye

My administrative and class work! demands that I
spend as much time at the office as I possibly can, and then
I use my car to arrive with the greatest economy of times
Really, I cannot operate my ear for 5¢ a mile, and I believe
62 is ebout as low an anybody can operate a car for, but I
Will leave that to your judgznente

Regarding Bob and Howard, I will be very glad to ask
them, but I find that they have a pretty heavy schedule in that
- Howard is President of the Senior Class School of Business, and
Bob is & candidate for Phi Peta Kappa, hence both boys are
students who miss very little class tine and it is difficult
to get them away. If I can possibly arrange it, I assure you
I will be glad to bring themy but I have made it a general —
practice never to take a boy away from the classroom because
the main purpose of his tenure here would be defeated.s

Thenk you for your letter of Jenuary 28th in reply
to mine of January 15th relative addressing the Traffic Club
of Kansas City at an early date.

At the Board of Directors’ meeting last night they
unanimously approved my suggestion to have you at our Luncheon
on Monday, March 24th providing the expense is not too great
as the Club does not provide a Luncheon Fund like they do for
their Recreation and Entertainment committees. Therefore, I
must keep the expense at a low ebb, and if you will be so kind
as to advise me just what expense will be involved, I shall
appreciate it very much.

If possible, could you have your son, Bob, and Howard
Engleman or any other members of your team along for a compli-
mentary luncheon that date? I am certain our Club members
would appreciate very much seeing these boys.

Thank you for your kind attention to this matter and

as of January 15. “Wy basketball dates have taken me out of
tom mueh of late, and these combined with speaking engagements
have kept me from answer your letter sooner.

Personally, I believe that March 24 would be a
better date for me than the other. We do not finish our
season until March 11 when we play our last game with
the Oklahoma Aggies here in Lawrences

The National Colleciate championships are played
on Friday and Saturday just before the 24th, and the finals
are played on the 29the So the 24th would still be during
baskethall seasone

Dear Dr. Allen:

Usually I write you to secure tickets for some K.U. contest,
but not this time.

I am writing you to ask if you could conveniently address
the Treffic Club of Kansas City at one of our Semi-monthly luncheons
this Spring.

I was appointed Chairmen of the Luncheon Committee for the
coming year and am endeavoring to line up some of these luncheons
as fer ahead of time as possible.

Shell certainly be pleased to have you as our Guest Speaker
on & date, later to be arranged for, and, if possible, have you
bring along two or three of your basketball boys or any others you
may wish to bring. It is my idea also to have with us on that date
(in event you can be here) Coach Edwards of M.U. with perhaps two
or three from his basketball squad. Also, will extend an invitation
to the "Quarterbacks" (who meet, as a rule, on Mondays also) to be
with us, and will esk Dr. Harold Zuber with some more of the old
K.U. grads and a few of the basketball officials here in K.C. to
try and attend. In fact, I'm going to dedicate that particular
luncheon as "K.U.-M.U." Day.

We meet at 12 o'clock noon and are out at 1:30 P.M., usually
giving the speaker approximately 30 minutes as there are always
various announcements to be made along with some introduction of
guests, etc.

The dates of our luncheons in March that are open are the
10th and 24th. April 7th is taken but April 2lst will be open.
My idea was to have you gentlemen on a date immediately at the close
of the besketball season. I do not know the final dates at this
time, so you may enlighten me on that.

Shall appreciate hearing from you at your convenience.

Dear Roy:

Doggone itt Avumber than a dumbbell! I have just awakened to
the fact that I have esoupted (for reasons no one knows) the responsibility
of coaching varsity baseball this springe I had not looked at the beseball
schedule closely when I wrote you on Jenuery 3lst, and now I find that we
are to play Oklahoma at Norman on April 18th and 19th. I have asked Okla-
homa to move these dates up to the 17th and 18th in order to make an open-
ing so thet we might attend the Kenses Relays on April 19th. If Oklahoma
is unable to shift the date up to the 17th and 18th, then we will be forced
to play on the 18th and 19th at Norman.

I have always met a great number of the high school basketball
stars here on the morning of the Pelays. They come in at our invitation
and shoot goals in the Gymmasium. Our varsity besketball players always
dress and visit with them and have a generally good time for a few hours.
We find this very wholesome and something we desire to cultivate.

the 17th, but the invitations have already gone to the high school boys
to be here in Lawrence. It seoms that my first obligation is to theme

With reference to reservation of a ticket to the game
March 7, I think that I will make the trip alone.

At that particular time, Mrs. Bennett will be quite
busily engaged in her music club work and regrets that she
cannot come with mes It is also possible that I may go to
Kansas City from there on business and that is the reason
T will come alones

I don't know whether or not it will be necessary to
reserve a seat for me, as I'll probably be pretty close to
the firing line, and I'll want to spend some time with Bruce.
However, I'll leave the matter entirely up to you, and you
can count on me being there for the Oklahoma game.

Thanks for your nice letter of the eighth which brought
back many pleasant memories to me. I'm sure we'll enjoy
spinning some interesting yarns when I come up for the game.

They asked me to take the baseball team since they have no coach
and all the material is either graduated or has quit school with the exception
_ of two boys who played on the squad last years One of our boys from Wichita,
who played here on the team last year entered the University of Oklahorme
because Jap Haskell gives so much attention to baseball, Jap is a hustler,
and since he is comected with the Boston Red Soxs in some unofficial capacity

I am not getting any remuneration for the jobe i am avine it just
as an act of kindness and one of cooperation, but I will get some Phi Beta ©

it is the worst baseball outlook I have ever seen at any school, but I am
going to get in there and hustle and piteh — see if we cannot do something

Your letters always inspire mée I never will forget the time I.
came to Lawrence in September, 1919 and had the pleasure of seeing you here
in a very important position and remembering that I also had the pleasure of
officiating basketball games when you were playing on the Varsitye And then
too I renember all the fine and loyal things that you did for me and then
later to have had the pleasure of having you on our Varsity squad, playing
when we had but few men, wmdersized, and not all blessed with the best fimdae
mentals, but fighting their hearts out for dear old Alma Waters. ‘Then I
remember Scrubby's and John Burmn‘'s episode of going to a show instead of
going to bede Discipline, winning the ball game, and building a foundation
for the fighting teams of the future was our Jobe |

: Well, Roy, we will spin a lomg yarn someday and we will have a lot

Dear Dr. Allen:

Your good letter pleased me very much and we are eagerly awaiting
the date of April 17th when you will be here.

Of course I should have mentioned to you that we would expect to
take care of your car expense in coming down here. You can surely
count on that. I will talk with you further about it when I see
you next month.

I noticed that Luster and Haskell are to guide the destinies of
Oklahoma University Athletics for next year. They are good boys.

I coached with Haskell at Oklahoma City, but I am afraid you can
certainly look for a rough and tumble football team because they
both work that way unless they have changed materially recently.
However, I know that the football team is not your particular
worry, and we will have to mention that it is plenty worry. I made
a bad mistake, I guess, recently when I met your football ceach

at Oswego, Kansas where he made a speech to the Highschool foot-
ball team before the Rotary assembly there, for I asked him how you
were and ardently requested that he give you my best regards. Well,
just between you and me, and being fair to all, I was told that

he didnt see you very often, in fact hadnt seen you for some time.

There was quite a discussion on the way home with the fellows I went
down there with, and I wasted no time in letting it be known that
the football results at K.U. for the past two years have been far
from satisfactory to me, and that the line-up doesnt look like

too much can be expected for next year. That may be a bit caustic
but nothing has done me quite so much good as to see your teams go
right on knocking them off year after year. However, the football
situation remains the same despite the change.

Will see you in March. Please give my regards to the family. se

Nothing would give me more plessure than to come to

There is only one thing that is bothering me, Roy, end
that is thise The state doesn't provide traveling expenses for its
faculty memberse Since we drive our own cars, we would have to
figure out a small stipend to sake connections. Does your group
provide any such necessity? You can sign me up for that date, if
everything is agreeable’ with youe

I have been figuring on asking you down here to talk to our Rotary
Club for some time and I havent had a time yet that I thought you could
get away.

However, we want you to come down April 17th and talk to the Club. We have
@ noon luncheon. Our club has about 50 members and we think we have a
pretty good club. They slipped on the choice for preident this year when
they chose me but outside of that we are doing quite well. So, if you can
possibly meke it, Doctor, I would greatly appreciate it and I know the
club will be flattered to have you.

I heve sent greetings to you by several @ifferent people lately, and I have
been following the good K.U. basket ball team. Looks to me like you are
right in there and that is as I promised the folks down this way. I am still
just as strong a believer in you and your ability as I ever was and the

folks down this way cant help but know how I feel for I certainly do not
hesitate to make it known whenever the occasion demands. Stay right in there
and I am planning on coming up when you play Bruce's team at Lawrence. I
believe it is sometime in March.
