AMERIGAN LEGION Dorscy-Lib rty Post No. 14 Lawrence 5 November 1945 How about it Mr, Legionnaire? With less than two weeks to go in the Legion Membership Drive, we find that if we are going to break any records we must "throw in the clutch" these last few days! Our biggest social meeting of the entire year,--the Armistice Day Stag, will be held next Saturday night, November 10th in our regular quarters. I can think of no better way to meet and entertain returning service men than to have them as‘ our guests at this stag. We will have plenty of food, drinks and entertainment. This should be THE MUST meeting for all members, --and the MUST should include at least one guest--A RETURNED VETERAN, There is enclosed a mimeographed list of all veterans who have returned to Douglas County during the last three months, They are all eligible for membership in our Post.--And they are all waiting for an invitation to be- come associated with us in Legion work. You and I know what the American Legion stands for.--e know the benefits that can be derived in this com- munity for veterans if our organization is strong. Yes, I know, you are not looking for any benefits, and,--neither am I. But we are now in a po- sition to give these boys from World War II some of the opportunities we have never enjoyed. Every addressee of this letter has sworn on oath to do certain things, “for God and Country" and "for Community, State and Nation". Well, here's what’ we can do, Take just ONE-HALF of ONE HOUR and make a personal call on one, two, or three of these returning veterans. Tell them you are glad they are back, then don't just invite them--BRING them with you next Saturday night. Perhaps you do not attend Legion meetings regularly and perhaps you do not take much of an active part in Legion affairs, I don't think that a man must attend all meetings to be a good Legionnaire, but I do believe that by lending his moral and financial support to the Post that he is doing a good job, and, most certainly, any man who has pledged allegiance to ANY — veterans group owes that organization a half hour of his time in ealling on one of our returning veterans who has just returned from a spot where, no doubt, he has gone through a lot of hell during the last two or three years. Come and bring a guest, Mr. Legionnaire. Sincerely, GEO. 0, STARKEY Vice Commander P.S. If you haven't paid your 1946 dues, why not take two minutes RIGHT NOW and send a check to Harry Barnard, c/o U.¢.E.S.
