One of the members of our department, Dr. Elbel,
has gone into the service, and I am taking over two of
his classes. I have practically a full teaching schedule
in the morning, and am coaching baseball in the afternoon.

Vie Hurt, our football coach, could probably come
at that time, as he has no classes, and also Wayne Replogle,
who has been a Ranger. He would make you a very fine speech.

You did not indicate by what train you and the team will
arrive in Chicago. Please give the name of the railroad and the time
of arrival.

Also, we want to have your subject. When will you be free to
go on the radio for an interview with Bob Elston, the sports editor
of the Tribune - Friday or Saturday?

I got in touch with Arthur Morse last week. We are handling
the circulation of the Jayhawker mailing list for him, and he in turn

tion to be our guest speaker at our annual meeting here in Chicago, Friday evening,

Betty Ruth Smith has a good committee, which includes your daughter, and
will be responsible for the reception of guests, decorations, music, and arrange-
ments in general. We will hold the meeting at a Swedish club, where we will enjoy
@ well provided smorgasbord. I am sure that we will all enjoy this change from
the conventional dinner.

By the way, we would be delighted to have the basketball team come to the
dinner. As our treasury is considerably in the red, and I suppose will be further
in by the time we meet our expenses, may I suggest that our committee would be
happy to be responsible for any expense in the dinner beyond what the boys would
pay at the hotel. This doesn't sound like very generous hospitality, does it?

I understand that the budget on which your team travels is better supplied with
cash then our treasurer - at least I hope soi

As President of the Alwmi Association in Chicago, I am concerned
that we have this year the best amual meeting of the Jayhewkers in the
history of our club. Last year we postponed our meeting until late in
the spring and hed a small turnout. We had an excellent address, however,
from Dr Schwegler. At that meeting we went on record to put new life into
the organization and to have a first class program well prepared in advance
for 1942.

I have just learned through your daughter that you will be here
with the basketball team on Jenuary 31. Can you not come twenty-four hours
earlier and be our guest speaker at our annual meeting on the evening of
January 307 I note from your schedule in the Alumni Magazine that you are
to be in Iowa City on the 29th and Chicago on the Slst.

We have a telephone squad organized, issued a bulletin a few weeks
ago, and will issue another promoting this meeting, and I can assure you
there will be a minimm of one hundred guests at the party.

Betty Ruth Smith is chairman of the social committee in charge of
music, decorations, reception of members, and as you know is an experienced
person. She has enlisted the cooperation of your daughter on the comnittee.

We will promote both the dimner on the 30th and a big turnout for
the game on the 3lst. It would be a fine combination.

their own food-=for example, roasts, pastries, etce, and

$13.90 per man per month for room, board, and everythinge

KANSAS.

TEMPLIN HALL, with the tract of ground on which it stands, known as “Alumni Place,” was
provided by contributions from the alumni of the University.

BATTENFELD HALL, also located on Alumni Place, was the gift of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Bat-
tenfeld in memory of their son, John Battenfeld.

CARRUTH HALL, was the residence of former Chancellors of the University. It was set
aside and equipped by the University as a home for self-supporting students.

The privilege of living in these Halls is granted as a scholarship to young men of excellent character,
high intelligence, and studious habits, who possess those qualities which will guarantee agreeable association
with their fellows. Appointments are made to a “Templin Hall Scholarship,” a “Battenfeld Hall Scholarship,”
or a “Carruth Hall Scholarship” as vacancies occur. Each scholarship is considered worth not less than one hundred
dollars annually, that amount being the estimated difference in cost between living in one of these houses and living in
other houses having equally desirable accommodations.

These three Halls, providing homes for a hundred and twenty students, are conducted as a single enter-
prise under the supervision of a Faculty Operating Committee. They are carried on co-operatively, resident
scholars paying only actual costs and necessary maintenance charges. The scholars perform all household
duties, such as cooking, serving meals, house-cleaning, care of grounds, etc. Each scholar may be called on for not to
exceed two hours of service daily. Scholars will provide their own blankets and towels and will bear the cost of laundering
them.

A deposit of $18 will be required on the first of each month, beginning September 1, and continuing
to include May 1, to be applied to the housebill for the succeeding month. Any surplus resulting from the
exercise of care and frugality will be refunded at the end of the year. On September 1 and January 15 a
deposit of $7.50 will be required to cover maintenance and replacement. From this deposit no refund can be allowed.
Should a scholar wish to withdraw from a Hall, he must give two weeks notice of his intention and he must also sacrifice
the amount of a two weeks’ housebill.

Applications for these scholarships must be on file with the Residence Halls Appointment Committee
not later than April first. They must be accompanied by the personal information called for on the form
provided, and a definite promise to maintain a high standard of scholarship as well as to observe all pre-
scribed regulations. At least three references, one of them a graduate of the University of Kansas, if possible, must be
offered. In addition, each applicant must furnish personal assurance by some reliable person as sponsor, preferably neither
a relative nor a high school teacher, that he is in every way trustworthy, that he is sincerely desirous of obtaining an educa-
tion, and that his housebills will be paid promptly.

The purpose of the University in establishing these scholarships and maintaining the Halls is to make
attendance at the University possible for some of those who probably would otherwise be unable to secure

a college course. It is intended to assure each scholar adequate facilities for study, a comfortable home, the
benefits of pleasant association with agreeable companions, and plenty of good, wholesome food. It is expected that young
men to whom these privileges are accorded will cooperate gladly at all times and in every way.

a A mild pbuilding boom on the University of Kansas campus was

launched nearly a year ago, when with the able assistance of Col, Karl
Baldwin, commandant of the R. 0. T. CG, date. a federal WPA grant of

approximately 380,000 was secured to begin construction on a new mili- a

tary science building, The University was required to put up $25,000 fn
eash, as well as building materials,,.as its share of the project. The
$25,000 was soon provided through the offices of the f ’ndowment Association,
the campaign deing directed by Lt. Lyle 0. Armel, assistant secretary

of the association, now somewhere in the Pacific,

Largest private contributions to the project were from Mrs, |
Paul Dinsmore, and 0. Jolliffe, Peabody, Kansas, banker and cattleman. a
