Italy July 10, 1944 Dear Doc: I received your April Rebounds some time ago and fully intended to jot you a line long before now, but there haven't been many time outs lately and my. letter writing time has been clearly cuviouna.: It was swell to hear of the activities and whereabouts of lots of the fellows I haven't seen since college days. Fen and T. P. certainly seem to be doing a whale of a job of setting : those "rising suns". This Italian campaign has been quite a struggle. The Krauts had the weatherman plies guard for them all last winter but when he decided to play on our teen this summer we really aterbidt to roll. Just like in basketball and all group sports, teamwork in this business is the key to success. We are all hoping that the European war is in its final stages for we are all getting mighty eager to see the U.S.A. again. Count me in on that post war reunion celebration and the sooner we can have it the better. Thanks for sending the Rebvundw and I'm eagerly looking forward to the next issue. I have been well acquainted with Marvin Vandaveer sinse 1938 when he entered the University as a freshman. : : ; He was an outstanding athlete, being highly proficient in football, basketball and baseball. He played three years as : quarterback on the varsity football team with outstanding success. He was also on the varsity baseball and basketball teams. This gave him an excellent background for his work in physical education. He graduated with a B. 3. degree in Biusation with a mjor in physical education, in June 1942. Immediately upon graduation from the University he was appointed coach of all sports and dir- ector of physical education at Haskell Institute. He also served as trainer of all athletic teams. Superintendent Solon Ayers, of Haskell Institute, told me personally that Vandaveer was an out- standing success as a teacher, coach and a gentleman; that he led his men by the power of his personality and the fine example that he set then. ad Suman deus Wik ue Gace ols en bk nee aameaaiased caubin: i & Serta te that efficiency he was offered the job as head trainer by the Kansas City Blues, Anerican Association professional bassball team. This is just a little note to let you know that we certainly miss seeing some of those good basketball games that we use to see. I noticed in last weeks paper that Kansas is still whipping the pants offfof their opponents, and _ they always. will as long as you are there. ( Hank Laieetti is one of the @fficers on this base, I can easily see why John Sunn had such a wonderful basketball team. Hank is playing om the Pre Flight Basketball team. He sure has an eye for the basket , and a darn good team Man also. C0 probably know by now that I was assignfled to the Athletic Dept. and put into the swimming dept. consider myself very fortunate to be put in the most important section of the Pre- Flight Program, This is wonderful experience. Our Yept. Head, Lt. Jack Torney is considered the best in the country. He used to coach at the University of Washington. “e is just completing the swimming manual for this program. e really believes in passing around the responsibilities in the Dept. esides teach- ing at least 4 hours per day, I have had the assignment of keep- ing up permanent records for approximately 1700 Cadets who have to pass at least 8 tests to graduate. Some pass as high as 17 tests; the additional tests better their grades, This month I Have been given the head of the Swimming Sports Program Dept. This consists of handling about 125 Cadets every aftermoon from 4:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. These Cadets are divided into five platoons. Each platoon has a coach. We have competition for these Cadets in individual events, relays and water polo. os nearer ee We had a swell visit with Murray 5rown an& his wife last evening. They were in San Francisco during the day. They drove out here toward evening and then we all went to Oakland for dinner. He is being transferred to Hutchinson, Kansas. The Yel Monte Pre- Flight Schoot is closing up. I am expecting some more of our schools to fold up before long. You see we are training so many Cadets that the Gov. is getting more than they can handle.
