Allen Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: I want to take this time to let you know that the rude display of sportsmanship as perpetrated by some one of our students has. been duly recognized in our student paper and public apology made to you and the Kansas University team. It seems that in 5000 students, you will always have one or two of the type that cannot come along with the advancement of a department. I did not take the matter too seriously, for I know that these things happen, and that you have been through the battles enough to know they will happen. We have tried diligently to maintain a high standard of sportsmanship here, particularly toward our visitors, and I believe are getting along in fairly decent shape. I know of no team or coach that comes here that is held in as high regard as you and your team. Therefore, let me extend personally to you my apology for this little incident which is one of those things that just happens. With all best wishes, I remain Geo. 7% Ve rker giv /mw Directop’of Athletics MCANANY. Allen, Director of Physical Education and Recreation, Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear "Phog"s: This acknowledges your letter of January 2, enclosing copies of letters written by you to Gwinn Henry and Professor Davis regarding the eligibility of Gerald Tucker. I had read Dan Partner's story and was at a loss to under- stand why the faculty members of the Big Six Conference had not enforced the eligibility rule. Since the transfer was made from Kansas State, it seemed to me their representative should have been the one to call attention to the violation of the rule, but I notice, according to the press, that Dr. King of Kansas State is saying that the action was not taken on the protest of Kansas State. IT am sorry to see Tucker involved in this mess. Apparently he is a good student, and, of course, he is a good athlete. Evidently the entire blame for the situation lies with those in charge of athletics at Oklahoma University and they should take the blame for it rather than try to pass the blame onto the enforcement of the rule. I thought Partner in this morning's issue of the "Times" emphasized that it was the fault of the Oklahoma authorities rather than anyone else that this situation was brought about. Apparently they are trying to "pass the buck® to someone else and they ought not to be allowed to get away with that e ; Whether Tucker plays or not, I hope K. U. can win from then. LAKE FOREST COLLEGE LAKE FoOrEST., ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH 1250 Edgewood Road July 31, 1942 Dear Dr. Allen: I thought you might like to know that I have recently become a father and that I have received my commission in the Naval Reserve. The baby, a little boy, came on Sunday, July 19, and he and Isabel came home from the hospital the day before yesterday. Both are feeling fine. I have been ordered to report to San Francisco on August 10 for training, and later to San Diego for further instruction, and finally, if I complete my training satisfac- torily, back to San Francisco, from which base I will go to sea. The doctor thinks that Isabel and the baby will be able to travel to Topeka, where they will stay with her parents, soon after I leave. Itwill be hard for us to be separated, but we both feel I am doing what I ought to do. I am very grateful to you for writing me a letter o fis recommendation. Sincerely, Vado May 2, 1942. Tom Yan Cleave, Jr., County Attorney's Office, Wyandotte County Court House, Kansas City, Kansas. : Dear Tomny: | It was indeed thoughtful of you to write us thanking us for what little courtesy we were able to extend you and yours during the past year. Many of these activities on our part have been more @ pleasure to us than they have to you, T assure you. You have been the individual in Kenses City, Kansas, who put his selective finger on the good high sehool talent who combine both athletic ability and intelligence, and we are highly thankful to you for this fever. Of course, you had help in the keeping of the boys here, but the difficult work of the selective processes belongs to you. Therefore, I assure you that you are way ghead of us and that we will never quite get caught up. By the way, Tormy, IT was just talking to Professor Ivy of the Physiology Department, and Bill Replogle out in front of the gymnasium this morning. Bill Brill is on the skids in physiol- ogy, end efter his first semester of good work he is slumping now @ jittle and giving the professors cause for concern. I em wonder- ing if you wouldn't write him right away and tell him he is in danger of falling into his old habits of volumtary inertia. I am checking him from several angles here and I do want him to amount to something. I dislike to have leggards on the teem, and espec- ially these fellows that all the professors talk about in the wrong way, if you get what I mean. Myre.
