Dear Dr. Allen:

I thought you might like to know that I have recently
become a father and that I have received my commission in the

Naval Reserve. The baby, a little boy, came on Sunday, July 19,
and he and Isabel came home from the hospital the day before
yesterday. Both are feeling fine.

I have been ordered to report to San Francisco on
August 10 for training, and later to San Diego for further
instruction, and finally, if I complete my training satisfac-
torily, back to San Francisco, from which base I will go to
sea. The doctor thinks that Isabel and the baby will be able
to travel to Topeka, where they will stay with her parents, soon
after I leave. Itwill be hard for us to be separated, but we
both feel I am doing what I ought to do.

I am very grateful to you for writing me a letter o fis
