The newer APA ships are named for counties of the various states
of the United States. This ship is named for the County of Telfair,
State of Georgia.

When the U. S. S. Telfair was launched on August 80, 1944, she was
sponsored by Mrs. J. L. Cauthorn, prominent San Francisco society
matron and wife of the president and publisher of the San Francisco
News.
