Your letter was the first intimation that I had that anyone was criticising the scheduling of twenty basketball games or your entering the team in the Washburn tournament. I am wondering who is responsible for such criticism. It seems to me this is a small matter to criticise anyone about. Certainly you were justified in scheduling the twenty games and in entering the Washburn tournament. If there is anything you would like to have me do about — this matter, please let me know. I hope you have a Happy and Prosperous New Year and that your team wins all of its basketball games. Sincerely yours, Aouleu ian —— TMV:SS : : eis aa ee ipl! An ‘3 Ba ; HH 3 if | ei : A. i i wee lag? Dear Phogs I was unable to contact anyone regarding the Wyandotte High School band for the evening of March 22 or March 25 until yesterday, as Mr. Schlagle and Professor Wellemeyer were both absent from the city. Yesterday I talked to Professor Wellemeyer and he just called me and said that the Wyandotte High School band would be glad to play on the evening of Saturday, March 24. The band would not be available on the 22nd. If you still desire this band to play on the 23rd, I wish you would write Professor J. F. Wellemeyer, who, as you know, is principal of the Wyandotte High School, and confirm the date with him and also advise him the details regarding time, etc. Naturally I was elated over the outcome of the Kansas- Missouri game. I am wondering whether the situation has changed for the coming Summer Session and if so whether I might be con- sidered for a place on your staff this summer. Dear Phogs I have your letter of February 24, regarding the securing of a band for the N.C.A.A. basketball tournament on March 22 and Mareh 26. I have no special ideas regarding this matter but will talk to Maurice and see if we cannot follow your suggestion and try and arrange to have the Wyandotte High School band for either the 22nd or 2érd. I also read with interest the copy of the letter which you wrote to Mr. Schlagle regarding Ray Evans. I notice that this boy again received an injury to his foot. The same thing happened to him last fall. I am wondering what the trouble is. Are you at all interested in Bill Brill? I think he would like to go to K.U. but will need help. While he played end on the football team, I understand he does not like football but he does like to play basketball. I wnderstand he is especially good on defense. I must admit your basketball team has surprised me. When I saw what sort of a schedule you had I didn't think you had a chance, but your team has certainly come throughiin great style. Evidently they have what it takes. While the next two games are tough ones, I can see no reason why they can't win those too and I will be pulling hard for them to do sO. Sincerely, ,. TMV: SS Aull dul P. S. I just talked to Maurice Breidenthal regarding obtaining the Wyandotte High School band for the 22nd or 2érd. Maurice asked me if I would talk to Mr. Schlagle, superintendent of schools, about it. I told him I would, and I just called Dr. Forrest C. Allen, February 27, 1940, Page 2. Mr. Schlagle's office and find he is out of the city and will not be back until Friday, March l. I will contact him then and will let you know if arrangements can be made for this band on one of those nights. T. M. V. MCANANY. OREXEL 3838 March 8, .1940 Dr. F. C. Allen, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Phogs I have your letter of March 5. I think Jim DeCoursey would make more of an effort to get the Ward High School band for the 22nd if you wrote and asked him to do this than if I asked him. While, as you know, we are the best of friends, I believe he would not make the effort for me that he would if you took the matter up with him direct. I think though you may have difficulty securing a high school band for the 22nd, as that day is Good Friday. Sincerely yours, Ton Mee. Dear "Phog": Words are entirely inadequate to express my thoughts over the outcome of the games Friday and Saturday. You may have had on your teams in the past more brilliant players, which I doubt, but I confidently assert that you never have had a team with more fight or one that wouldn't be beaten.
