PHONE 633 WALTER A. SCHAAL LAWRENCE, KANSAS General Campaign Chairman Oetober 6, 1956 Dear Friend: Once each year about this time it becomes necessary for the Salvation Army to appeal to the Citizens of Lawrence for funds with which to carry on its Spiritual, Character building, and Charitable work for another twelve months. A campaign for funds will be made in Lawrence the week of October 10th. The minimum budget necessary to enable the Army to function efficiently is $2,400. The work of the Salvation Army in our community is outstanding. Throughout the depression they have been aiding families in an ef- fort to be self-sustaining, lending assistance in emergencies by giving temporary relief, thus preserving the morale and self- respect of the unfortunate. In other years the larger part of the load has been carried by downtown business men. This year, with an increase in the budget, a larger group must share in this work. Hence members of the Univer- sity staff and employees are asked to accept a share of this re- sponsibility by making individual contributions on or before next Wednesday, October 13th, and by sending them to the undersigned at 201 Green Hall. Make checks payable to the Salvation Army. I thank you in advance for your kindly consideration of this matter and trust that I will have the pleasure of receiving a do- nation from you in keeping with your appreciation of the oe work being done by the Salvation Army in Lawrence. C. Allien, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Phog: Thanks for your letter of the 13th relative to your visit with Bill Hahn. Judge Earl Thomas, father of George, talked to the Hahns after they returned home from Lawrence. You seemed to have made a "hit" with them, as I was sure you would. I do not know whether they met Gwinn. They didn't seem to know. They told Farl they had met a lot of coaches. Whether Bill will enter K. U. I do not know, but I hope he does. If he doesn't, I am sure it will not be your fault or mine. Sincerely, TMV:SS MCANANY. Dear Phog: Thanks for your letter of November 1, enclosing article from the Rotarian magazine which you wrote, Major Griffith taking the opposite side of the matter. You were right in thinking I might be interested in seeing this. I also think you are correct in your stand, but doubt if it can be brought about. I had intended to write you after the University paper had criticised Coach Lindsey, as I remembered such a blast two or three years ago. It may be the criticism was justified, but I thought it was illtimed during the middle of the season. I am sure whoever wrote the article did not think it would play a part in bringing about the winning of the game with Kansas State, but apparently it did have an influence. seers i. Allen Director of Health and Physical Education University of Kansas Lawrence, Kanaas Dear "Phog": The weather in Springfield today makes me wish that I were in Atlanta with you warching Georgia Tech play base- ball. Last spring in Atlanta I talked with you about the possibility of teaching in your 1939 summer session at which time you advised me to write you in January. I have taught at Wittenberg for the past two summers and will teach here again this year unless some other opp- ortunity should present itself. I am of the opinion that an individual is stimulated by making new acquaintances, especially in his fietd, and by being placed in new sit- uations. I am therefore particularly qnxious to teach at some college other than Wittenberg this coming Summer. | All I know is what I read in the papers, however they say that Kansas has a good basketball team again this year at which I am not surprised. With kindest personal regards, I remain Very sincerely yours, John B. Van Why, Director JBVWsP g | es ia 3 oe Le ft ap fi
