Dear Sir:

Once again the time has arrived for us to canvass
the United States and determine the athlete of this country
who, by his performance as a competitor and by his example
and influence as an amateur, did most to advance the cause
of sportsmanship during the year 1958, and, therefore,

-entitled to the James E,. Sullivan Memorial Trophy.

You are one of the 500 outstanding leaders of
the world of sport, selected from all sections of the
United States, who are being invited to serve on the
Tribunal to decide the athlete to receive the award for
1938. Will you serve as a member of thia Tribunal?

If you agree to act; and we hope you will,
please send at your earliest convenience and not later than
November lst, the names of not exceeding three competing
athlctes or active sportsmen or sportswomen, who in your
opinion, are entitled to consideration for this awarde
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU STATE THE REASONS WHY YOU
BELIEVE YOUR NOMINEES ARE ENTITLED TO CONSIDERATION.

Acts of sportsmanship, excellence of performances, strength
of character, qualities of leadership, force of personality,
and high ideals of amateurism should be taken into
consideration in making your nominations.

In the past many members of the Tribunal made
their choice on athlctic ability and popularity which came
through wide newspaper vublicity. Plcase do not vote on
athictic ability only. If you do not know your nominces
personally please refrain from submitting such names. Good
charactcr, sportsmanship and high idcals of amateurism
are as important as athlictic ability. If you know of any
rcason why some outstanding candidate should not reccive
