June 14, 1946 i Mr. Melvin Thornhill , | : Protection, Kansas Dear Melvins Agein it is one of those cases where. we are to be on the run when we go to Coldwater. Fred Ellsworth has it planned that I am going to Dodge City for a noon luncheon on June 28 and then to Coldwater in the evening of June 28. Then I was planning on catche ing a train back to Lawrence because I have summer school on and in the rush of things I will not be able to be away from home addi- tional days at that time. Really, Mutt, I am coming to visit you some time when you are not harvesting ard sometime when I have more time than the law allows me at the present. | : ‘ Thank you a thousand times for the offer of that fine steak. I will tell you what you can do for me, if you will, If you want to put a couple of nice steaks in some dry ice in a pox and parcel post them to Mrs. Allen and me at 831 Louisiana, don't think -we would not be delighted to have them. Meat is a real probe lem here. I have not sufferred though, but Mfse Allen does miss it more than I do. | Hee We sold our big home at 801 Louisiana and moved into a cottage which Mrs. Allen bought for Mi%ton when he finished law school. Milton has bought his own home out on Vermont and we have moved into the cottage, where we enjoy it much more with lots less work and up= keepe = I have written Fritz Crisler for four tickets for the Michigan-Army game at Ann Arbor for October 12. I will hold your check here in the safe until I find the amount. Also, I would not want to send your check because I would have a better opportunity “of getting those tickets for myself than I would if he thought I was getting them for someone else. : With all good wishes, f am Sincerely yours, e Director of Physical Education, FCAsHF Varsity Basketball Coach. Jim states that he knows you very well and the reason he is writing you first is because he does not have your brother's or your nephew's address. I told Jim that I was much interested in your nephew's coming, not only on account of his fine academic record, but also on account of his fine scholastic record. I am wondering if this is Buck's boy? If it is, it causes me to soliloquy "Ny, how time flies." “Jt ae good to hear fren yous Geahge, and it was splendid to see you and meet yowfine son. Their subse~ quent championship indicated what an outstanding group they ares Certainl it is no discredit to be beaten by such a great club, in my opinion. Last week I had a letter from my brother who lives in Richmond, Virginia, and is one of the partners in a foundry there. He has a son, Bob Trombold, who is a senior in high school this year and who during the basketball sé just closed made a very creditable records He was chosen all-city, all-s and all-district pleying with Thomas Jefferson High at Richmond. He scor over 150 points from a guard positione His dad tells me that he was an A and B student and plans to teke up Mechanical Engineering in college. Naturally, I am interested in seeing him come to KeU. if it can be worked out that waye His dad would also like to see him come up there since he was also a former student in the Engineering school at Kansas. However, h sees a number of obstacles in the way of his coming this far from home to go to college, particularly since several schools in Virginia have express special interest in him including Virginia Polytechnic Institute. I don! like to give up on the idea without exploring all possibilities though, and I thought you could give me some information as to whether there is a use trying to encourage an out-of-state boy to come to Kansas in view of crowded conditions up there both housing and in the school itself. I hav heard that it might be exceedingly difficult for out-of-state students to get into the school at all unless they had veteran status or some other ~ special qualification. We would appreciate it if you could give me info tion concerning this before I go any further toward encouraging him to tr: to come to Kel. i ee. Thanks again for taking care of us on the game tickets. I don't suppose boy, Johnny, will ever have anything thrill him quite as much as the trip Kansas City, the high point of which was getting to meet you the night of the game a Sincerely yours, es, April 4, 1946 Miss Alma Truskett Neal, Kansas Dear re ss _Trusketts ‘I eis you to know how much I appreciate your culinary skill by selecting for me the most wonderfully delicious lemon pie. In order for us to meet our pub- lishing schedule, would you be kind enough to return this ballot in the stamped envelope enclosed so that it will be in our hands by February first, sooner, if possible. We feel that at this particular date your opinions can be pretty well established since in most cases you have seen the outstanding players in your section of the country perform. To facilitate the poll, it has been decided that one vote will be allowed for each paper. If more than one basketball expert covers the game, we would appreciate a joint selection of their choices. It is our plan to publish the names of writers and newspapers, as well as coaches and colleges, of all participants in this nation- wide poll. This list will appear with the article announcing the All-American selections in the issue which hits the newsstands on March 22. We greatly appreciate your cooperation with this poll.
