Mr. T. L. Thaxton : 1000 MeGee Kansas City, Mo. Dear Mr. Thexton, I am sending you a check for $10.00 and my thanks to you for your kindness and your courtesy in sending me the golf shoes. I more than a little appreciat this courtesy and I have always endeavored to reciprocate with recommendations of your shoes to many of my friends who have foot trouble. Only yesterday afternoon I was pleying golf with a friend of mine who com- plained of arch trouble and I recommended this shoe both for street and golf. _ I noted that you have changed your address from 915 Grand Ave. to 1000 McGee. I will make a mental notation of this and will - refer my fiends to you at this new address. I did not want you to feel that you were losing money on me when I accepted any courtesy or gratuity from you unless I felt that you could receive financial gain by cooperating with me. As Head of the Department of Physical Education of both men and women I ob- serve, it seems to me, a growing amount of difficulty with the feet of people or else they are paying more attention to their feet than heretofore. I have been wanting te stop by and get another pair of street shoes. This pair that I have, while they fit, there isa wrinkle that breaks across both shoes and while they do not impair the wearing quality they do affeet the looks quite a bit. Fuse foot forms in them each night, and by doing that I can keep them in — pretty good shape. They are also just a little tight for wool sox so I want to get another pair that the heavy wool sox will — fit in comfortably, and too, I want the extra ry sole. These Do you have on hand the extra heavy sole? And is there any extra charge for such? I would like very much for you to order me a — pair, but I believe I had better stop by and try on a pair to get the exact fit , at least so there will be no mistake in them. o2- So I will stop by at my first opportunity for a visit and a fit. . 3 I really want to do something for you for yow kindness and per- haps you could give me some material so that I could help you more than I have in the past. There was a young fellow here at Obers that puded the shoe very strongly and he went over pretty definitely. He was always asking me to trade with hin, but I always beosted for you because you were extremely kind and courtegous to me. This young man, Scott, haz gone to Wichita now and I believe you can get many of the Lawrence customers at your place, I will talk to you about this when I come in. I had a time getting just the shoe you wanted. : But here they are and the shoes sell or did sell for $12.50 but a make-up shoe costs me $1.00 extra to make up a single pair, that would of made them sell for $13.50. Allen, Director Physical Education and Recreation University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Just received your letter concerning Ray Williams. It has occurred to me that you may be in a position to recommend some of your boys who may be qualified as employment interviewers here. They should have at least a certain amount of knowledge concerning occupations in mechanical fields and above all should be able to pass judgment and be able to act as contact man with shop employees and supervisors. We are also interested in someone who has a background which would fit into work in our training division. A fundamental knowledge of vocational educa- tion is important and also a personality which would make the individual acceptable to enable him to establish congenial relations in the shop. I would suggest that if you have anyone in mind for any of these jobs that you write me direct first before referring anyone to us. I am writing you concerning this because I believe you have a good idea as to the type of fellows for whom we are looking for this kind of work and believe that some of the boys with whom you have worked should have most of the fundamental qualities that we need. We have Ray's application on file and will give it every consideration as openings occur. We are looking forward to your promised visit. Wichita, Kansas Dear George, I just met Ray A. Williams who mentioned the fact that he has applied to you for a position with Boeing. I have known Ray for eleven years during which time he wrked in the business office of the University. His position during that time has been as bookkeoper and inventory clerk. In all those years I have found Ray a pleasant fellow who is always willing to cooperate and a man who is interested in going out of his way to help others. To my knowledge Ray has always paid his bills very promptly and in my opinion is e very fine citizen in this community. He owns his own home here in Lawrence and is the father of a boy anda girl. It has always been my impression that a man who owns his own home and raises @ family is a very substantial citizen. For that reason I would be gratified if you could find a place for this deserving young Man. I assure you it was a greet pleasure to heve you visit with me, end I am locking forward to the time in the future when I shall run out and heve lunch with you and your very amiable bo§s, Mr. Schaeffer. Mr. George Trombold, Persennel Director, Boeing Airplane Co., Dear George: - Thank you for your letter of the lst instant, en- closing application blanks. I have called Ray Williams, ask- ing him te fill out one of them for yous ‘Kappelman left for Oakland, Califernia, where he is going to work in the shipbuilding yards and play Sunday ball. | | The first time I get to Wichita I will not fail to stop by to see you. As you know, I am kept pretty busy with my teaching in the mornings, basketball practice in the afternoons, and speeches out over the state. I just can't get away from town umless I am called. But sometime when I am called to Wichita I will come in to see you. Very sincerely yours, Directer of Physical Education and Recreation, PCA:sAH Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coache Dr. Forrest C. Allen Director of Physical Education & Recreation University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: We are definitely interested in Ray Williams' application and I believe we can find a place for him in our Accounting or other similar departments. I can understand the haziness regarding the type of man that we are looking for in our training division. It is rather difficult to describe the back- ground that we need there. The man probably should have a little more mechanical background than I recall that Kappelman has although he is the type of personality for which we are looking. I have talked to him several times about coming here and even brought him out to interview officials here prior to my connection with the company. At that time I had the same impression as that expresged in your letter that he was still hoping for that good season with the stick$ so he could go up with pro ball. I believe there is some spot in the organization for him although it probably would not be the training job for the present at least. I would like to corres- pond with him if he is definitely interested in quitting pro ball. We have quite an ambitious recreational program lined out for the winter. Among other things we could use him very nicely to help with it. You will be in- terested to know that Bud Browning started early this week training a basketball squad which will eventually play in several local leagues as well as in a good sized inter-plant program. We are enclosing several application blanks for Williams, Kappelman, or any others whom you might recommend. We will be glad to talk with Williams or Kappelman at any time they may care to come down. I appreciate very much your interest in our problems and am still looking forward to your promised visit.
