The expectation of getting you to come down here makes me definitely favorable to your seeing him in Wichita. I should appreciate a response to this if you think you might be able to come down here. If such a visit appears to be too far distant, however, it might be advisable to have Joe go to Lawrence. Both Mr. Schaefer and I are looking forward to the possibility of your making the former arrange- ment. I know you will be interested to learn that Paul "Hook" Fisher is the Kansas City Star's representative among a group of important Eastern editors which is to visit our plant next weekend as a part of a nationwide tour of war industries. Paul spent a couple of days out here recently while covering a story and we had a lot of fun recalling old times. I am looking forward to the prospect of seeing you before long. The present one concerns the right arm of one of our prospective ball players, Joe Gulledge, by name. Joe hurt his arm several years ago and, I believe, partial- ly through improper care on the part of certain trainers, now has a condition which apparently needs some really expert care. Joe is one of several young ball players in our employ who have left professional baseball with the thought of starting to work to build themselves | a future in aircraft. I hesitate to write you concerning this case, because I know the demands on your time, but I thought if it were possible, it would be very much appreciated if an op- portunity could be secured for you to look at Joe's arm. It appears to be a quite unusual injury in that it is behind the shoulder joint (I am trying to think of the neme of the muscles, but I am afraid my Anatomy has slipped away from me). June lst, 1942. Coach Allen, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Mr. Allen: I am taking the liberty in writing you in regard to my kid who dees nothing but practice with a basketball. He is 14, weighs 128 lbs. and is 5'8" tall. He was on Junior Hich Basketball squad the past season and is expecting to go "Great Guns)the coming season. Now this is what I would like to know -- -- the boy wants some expert instruction, and I would like to be able #6 give him some. As I have a brother-in-law that teaches at University of Alabama and a nephew James Roberts who is end on their foot-ball team, I thot that I would send him dow there for a month or six weeks and try to have their basketball ccach teach him some new shots. Of course I expect to pay the coach, if he does the teach- ing of my kid. Would that effect the amateur standing of my boy? I would certainly be grateful to you if you will be so kind as to clear this matter up for me. Several years ago, I bought a hoop and I spend from 1 to 2 hours daily throwing the basketball to boys that congregate at my place. I have just bought by third basketball. I am wondering what I will do when my kid goes off to college,- take some smaller boys in hand, I guess. Sincerely yours, Pare Chie Laurence C. Turner, P.O.Box 572, Independenee, Kansas. Alien Director of Athletics The University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Somehow the years have run by rather rapidly, and I did not realize, nor did I suspect, that you were approaching your 25th anniversary until the celebration was all over. I want to take this opportunity to extend my somewhat belated, but none the less sincere, best wishes for the next twenty-five years. From the amount of “pepper” you ex- hibited the last time I saw you I have no doubt but that twenty-five years more is a conservative estimate. I feel that I express the almost unanimous feelings of all the boys who have worked under and with you when I say that it has been a rare privilege to have known you and to have felt the upbuilding influence that you have exerted in sports and on the lives of all with whom you have come in contact. Your recent victory over A & M made all of us down here very happy. I had hoped to be in Kansas City to see the game tonight with Frosty, but it didn't work out, so my pulling for the boys will have to be by remote control. I hope you go through the tournament on top as usual, but win or lose what I have said still goes. Congratulations again on your anniversary and many happy returns. I am today sending you a pair that is the thickest sole shoe we make. They are a new shoe with us as they are the supreme grade shoe, and the factory just brought them out this fall. This pair shoes are $12.%5 and you will notice the heels are the new type heel to conserve the rubber in this country. A number of my customers that are now wearing this shoe tell me that they like this heel much better than the old half rubber heels that our shoes used to carry. The other tan pair you have in a wing tip are 9-8 weight soles and this pair are 11-8 weight soles and the heaviest ones we make. So I am sending them for your approval, and if they are not what you want then you may return them. If they are 0.K. then you can send check for same. In the first paragraph of your letter you speak of a sm&ll wrinkle in the pair you are now wearing. When you are in Il will be glad to examine them and see just what the trouble is. I truly appreciate your business sand hope that I may always serve you. Yours very truly, LK Lh
