Allen, Department of Physical Education, ye University of Kansas, a Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Doctor,-= > This is to advise you that the young man, Mr. Gale Botts, who accompanied my wife to see you this last spring has finally de- termined to come to K. U. for school this fall. The graduates of . Kansas State at Menhattan have been after him hot and heavy to get him to go there, but he has obtained a love for K. U. and was very highly impressed with you, and wants to come down there and make good. We will have as our principal of the high school here this yeer Lawrence Butler, whom I believe was a member of the K. U. basket ball squad in the late twenties or earliy Thirties, perhaps that will help boost the desire of the local students to go to K. U. We have another boy much interested in coming to K. U. but I'll have to see what can be done towards obteining a job of part time work at least. He is elso a good basketball and baseball player. Whether good enough for the class played in K. U. or not remains until he has been developede Assuring you of our desire to help in every way possible, and knowing you will be interested in these boys, I am, 8 erely yours, JET: I JAMES E. We have another athlete in high school here this year who is really a good all round man; probebly one of the best in Western Kansas. That is Jack Webb, football, basketball and track. He ran the 100 yard dash at the State Regional in Hays last year in 9.9. Perhaps if the right person contacts him he could be convinced to go to K. U. I understand his inclinations are for Colorado. You could write to Goodland or Syracuse to find out what the thought of him when he palyed against them this year. Fowever, I believe if you have a distance of three feet instead of the four thet ne one will esause you any difficulty. Pather than to necessitate the extra expense, I believe you would be justified in resorting to this plan as you heve discussed it in your letter. I thank you for your good letter, and I am vory sorry that I feiled to answer it promptly. . Trusy, suPERINTENDENT LANE, KANSAS May 25-40 Dr. F.C. Allen Director of Physical Education Kansas University Lawrence Kansas. Dear Dr. Allen: There has been a question come to my mind, as we come to the refinishing of our gymn floor. This years rules specify the end lines as being four feet back of the backboards instead of the old two feet. Do you think that this rule will become permanent and compulsory 7 We can set our lines back about one foot and still have room to pass the ball in from the outside. This would give us a total distance of three feet instead of the four as suggested by the rules. Do you think that this is advisable? We can put extentions on the goals and comply with the reales but this would necessitate quite an expense. I would appreciate your opinion. .l hope that you are planning a pleasant summer, you rightfully deserve the rest. Dear Phog: I have just finished reading the article "Give the Ball to Junior !" in the Dec. 28th issue of the Saturday Evening Post. I know that you appreciate the fact that all Kansas University Alumni feel a deep debt of gratitude to you for the wonderful teams you have coached, and the favorable publicity given to the Kansas University. On page 41 I notice that you recognize the value of a small cup of honey for your players. Being in the distribution of food products, we have one out-— standing item which is Lake Shore brand Comb Jar Honey produced by the W. F. Straub & Co. at Chicago, Ill. This is a blend of four honeys which is pasteurized and largely pro- duced by this company from their own bees, of which they have over 12,000 hives which they transport from the Southern States each Spring and Summer to harvest the crop and then return the bees to the Southern climate for the Winter months. Inasmuch as this honey is outstanding and is produced by a man who also recognizes the health value from the standpoint of a biological chemist, we are taking the liberty, Phog, of asking Mr. Straub to send you a liberal supply of samples of this honey. Mr. Straub has had a great deal of success in using this honey for an afternoon pickup in.a glass of water for the average business man. . We believe that some trainers of horses even recognize the value of honey. | Inasmuch as Mr. Straub lives near Evanston, ino doubt, he and Dutch Lomborg will also cooperate. !
