~ WELCOME STUDENTS The 1941 Summer Session has opened, and the Kansan wishes to extend a hearty welcome to all students. Already a bankers’ clinic is underway, and next week Kansas teachers and administrators will take over with their conference+on curriculum. _ Also next week the first of two insurance meet- ings will be held. Following that, Prof. Bert Nash’s reading institute will hold the center of the stage. Dean D. M. Swarthout has released the schedule of musical events and lectures for the summer, and from all indications, students will be well enter- tained. In addition, Dr. F. C. Allen’s recreational pro- gram will provide ample opportunity for athletic activity for every person enrolled in school. In many © ways there is a better recreational program in the summer than in the regular winter term. ‘The sum- mer schedule is so inclusive, that no student is left out. The enrollment this year is somewhat less, but that must be blamed on the selective service. Doubt- less, enrollments in all universities and colleges will be much less from now on—at least until the present. emergency has passed. Recreation Underway Program. Monday © The summer recreation program is expected to be in full ‘swing by Monday evening, Dr. Forrest C. “Phog” Allen, director of the Summer Session recreation program, said today. “Play- ground facilities may be available this weekend if the lights are erected in time,” Allen said. ® The playground will be on the lawn in front of Fowler shops just east of Robinson gym, and will be open every night except Saturday and Sundays from 7 to 9 o'clock. The entire quadrangle and the area in ‘front of the gymnasium will be lighted. Shuffleboard, loop tennis, volley ball, goal-hi, and folk dancing are a few of the recreational facilities | available. Monkey mazes twice as large as last year will be up this | week. _ Use of the play facilities not lim- ited to students. The family as a unit is urged to make use of the play- ground, Doctor Allen said. . Special play arrangements will be made: for children. A band stand will be erected for | folk dancing and for Sunday night band concerts. Dorothy Garrett will teach folk dancing to children. Dur- ing hot weather road dances will be: - held. between Fowler shops and the Anatomy building. _, The swimming pool in Robinson gymnasium will be available after- ‘noons to both men and women. Mrs. Josephine Sams is in charge of the women’s swimming program. A faculty volleyball league will be organized soon. Doctor Allen’s class in Community Recreation will have charge of the evening games. Dave Shirk, William Greene, Denzel Gibbens, and John Cress, are among those who will aid the recreation director.
