June 20th, 1941 ¢ Mr. H. k. Chandler University of Kansas 4ewrence, *ansas Dear Mr. Chandler. Pursuant to our conversation, we have arranged for Russell Chambers to play for our weekly dances for six weeks in the Union Building. He will have a nine-piece orchestra. It is a student organization. Sidney Dawson, a colored boy, is their high-light singer. This is the old “lyde Bysom band. We are to pay sixty dollars for six weeks. Ten dollars for weekly engagements. I was informed by Russ Chambers. that Mr. Wiley and the band camp would give help to us and pay a similar amount. Yesterday afternoon I talked with ly, Wiley and it seems that Mr. Chambers and he had not worked out every detail. It is possible that Mr. Wiley may not join US Russ Chambers was expecting to get ten dollars from the band camp and ten dollars from us. But, Mr. Chambers called me and said that even though the arrangements had not gone through with Mr. Wiley yet, even if it should fail, that they would keep their word and play out the schedule for us at our original price of ten dollars. I thought this was a very fine spirit and I'm sure that we will stimulatethe interest among the Hill students for this popular attraction. We will plan to use the outdoor street dances if the Union Building gets too warm. There's still a little uncertainty regarding the best available night for the dances. We're working on this and will notify you definitely as soon as the date is set. Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education and Recreation-Varsity Basketball and Baseball Coach. © FCA: RC
