Those are written on an average Ce. about once a month. I, too, am sorry I did not imow that you were so close at hand. Had I kmown your address I would have stopped by and seen the family. Your Aumt Bess was so anxious to go to Independence that evening that I called off a few appointments and made the trip. I was not sorry because both of us had a very good time. I don't believe I ever saw her enjoy an evening more with her old friends. Congratulations on your call to the Navy. I am very sure that you will be happy your whole life in doing what you have done. You were a very brave young man to leave a family your size and make the move that you have. I am happy, too, to know of the good fortune of Euclid, Homer, Jr., and Richard. ‘They certainly are doing mighty well, and I am very happy for them. I was happy to hear from Lois and the boys, and am wishing you and yours every good fortime. , Affeotionately and fraternally yours, Director of Physical Education, PCA :AH Varsity Basketball Coach. He states, “If you will write to: Capt. John fT. Andrews,” and so forth. Well, since we don't write to this fellow very often I want to be the first one to let you know how much we miss you here at Rotary and how proud we are of you in the service of our comtry. My Jayhawk Rebounds, of course, keep you informed as to the general run of things in and sround our department and the University. Of course we do not get to tell you much about Rotary, but I am sure that Caryl Dodds and some of the other Rotarians supply that much-needed information for you. I have stacked on my desk now letters from boys in England and France who were the first in on D Day. I will-not go into these, although I would like to include several excerpts from some of the boys who have really seen hell in action. They have got their chins up and they are out for the Jerries double-fast and double-time. Of course all of us are anxiously awaiting the day when you and all the rest of our boys can be back with us in the peaceful- pursuits of our little quaint college town of Lawrence. We will be pulling for you, Jack, and we want you to know that we often think of you and Rotaryann Ruth. — With all good wishes, I am Rotarily yours, Director of Physical Education, Varsity Basketball coach. Dear Michael: I read with great pleasure that the Board of Regents have extended your tenure for et least one year. You had told me that you were to retire as head of the department July 1st un- less there was some disposition made. However, the newspaper reports were twisted, but I still got the right idea. The paper said that the Board of Regents had made the extension of time for the employees where the deadlines was 65 yoars of age and the heads of departments at 70. That rather garbled account reminded me of the spaghetti- bender who had just come to America when he was explaining to — one of his American patrons in broken English how pleased he was with the unbounded success that he had obtained from his corner hot tamale stand, “If business is as good yesterday as it was tomorrow <- py jiminy”. | . do I got the proper implication that you are going to be with us not only this next year but we are hoping many more years. Dear Mrs. Litecher: ‘Mrse Melba Schilling Kost was an instructor of dance and physical education classes in ow: department during the academic year 1941-42. I believe the best way to describe her personality and abilities will be to follow the outline suggested in your letter. Sensitivity to other people's reactions -= She is not particularly sensitive to another person's reactions, and is rather selfish - that respect. Her capacity ithe self-expression is very good. ‘She is able to tell people what she wants and they oan understand her easily. Her capacity for assuming and discharging responsibility, I feel, depends upon whether or not she is interested. If it is to her particular interest she will de it; if not, she can’t be bothered. I would not trust her too far with responsibility. She has a very high degree of intelligence and hea good initiative and resourcefulness. In her attitudes toward other people she is not particularly sympathetic, and yet really rather understanding, depending upon whether or not she likes a person. She allows this to influence her attitude toward others. Shé is not a mature person in many respects, and ie wetable emotionally. She is a good organizer of her own work, but not of her own self. i would recommend her for this type of a position with a great deal of hesitancy. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas My dear Dr. Allen: Mrs. Melba Schilling Kost has placed with us her application for a case aide position in our department end has given your name as a reference. The American Red Cross has stated responsibilities for service to families of men in the active military forces as well as to certain of the ex-service men and their dependents. Because of the responsibilities to the increasing number of families of service men, we are now employing people as case aides to assist our regular case workers who have had special training for this work in graduate schools of social service. Because the case aides will lack this professional training, it is highly important to evaluate carefully the personal assets and capacities of these applicants. Therefore, we ask for your careful consideration in replying to the following guestions: (1) (2) In what capacity have you known the candidate? Describe the candidate's personality and abilities as indicated by: sensitivity to other people's reactions capacity for self-expression capacity for assuming and discharging responsibility intelligence and initiative attitudes toward other people maturity and personal organization In the foregoing, I have endeavored to note factors that we have found to be of special importance in our current situa- tion. In addition, we shall appreciate any other observations Dr. Forrest C. Allen —e— March 10, 1944 or comments you would regard as pertinent. Inasmuch as we are expecting to make some additions to the staff in the immediate future, we would like very much to hear from you as soon as possible. Thank you for this courtesy. Allen University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: First permit me to express my appreciation of the fine tribute you paid to our basketball coach, Cliff Rock. We certainly feel that he did an excellent job with the material at hand. Throughout the entire season, in spite of the chameleon changes in his starting lineup, he never lost his optomism and was exceedingly fine about not complaining. Your words of praise will be cherished by Coach Rock. Secondly, it is rumored that at the University of Kansas, colored students are permitted to use the swimming pool at the same time as it is being used by the white students. That problem has been a thorn in our side and only a few weeks ago it was brought to the attention of the authorities. If it is true that the Uni- versity is sponsoring such a program then we have no reason to handle the problem any differently than it is being handled in your department.
