Deeenber 24, 1937.6 Mite Me Le Yolton, Regional Director, We Ae Scheaffer Pen Company, Pert Madison, Towie Dear Irs Yolton: _ Thank you for your inquiry of December 22nd concerning our desk pen sete To be perfectly frank with you, M's. Yolton, the pen with the red ink never functioned. | My secretary, who was with me over twelve years and is with us yet, can vouch for it that I kept protesting to her that it seemed queer that the red ink would never work six hours after she filled it. 1 would ask her each morning when I wanted to use it if she had refilled it. It seemed as if the red ink pen never got the job done fron the beginning. Then after a year or so the pen with black ink began to fail mee I recall taking it back to Mir, Marks, and — whether he sent it in or uot I am mot sure, but he talked with your man about it, and whatever was done with it, it still would not work aad I used it for years only as on ornaments Incidentally, it was too expensive for mo to use as an ornanent. I would not object in the slightest to the pens if they would write. The points are ali right and I like them fine as a desk set when they work, but really they have never given me any services I have talked to a great number of owmers of this similar desk set and each one had the sane difficulty. i have yet to find a single man who owed this particular type of pen that said it gave him satisfactory services I contacted at least a dozen, In fact, I talked to Mr. Marks himself about his, and he said that it never gave him service, so it seems right that I should not expect to work if his did note your mine I thought it was just a miss~«out that firm had made on this type of pen, but I was not satisfied to pay this much money and get so little service. I am signing my letter with a Sheaffer Lifetime which I bought from Mr. Marks, one of your newest barrels. I like this Lifetime very much, and only wish your desk set would fumection like my vest edition. Very sincerely yours, FCAsAH : Director of Physical Education. W. A. SHEAFFER PEN CO. W.A. Allen December 22, 1937 Lawrence, Kansas Dear Dr. Allen: Sol Marks & Sons have sent us the socket and the Desk Pen from your Desk Set. We are sorry you have had so much trouble with the set in the past, end to be absolutely sure that the set gives perfect service in the future, we'd like very much to have you tell us a little more definite- ly just what the trouble has been and how the set has failed to give service. If we know definitely just what your trouble has been, we are quite sure that we can adjust the pens and socket to give the perfect service you have a right to expect from a Sheaffer Lifetime. It is possible, of course, that the points now in the pens aren't especially suited to your style of writing. In answer, we would appreciate it if | you would give us a sample of your handwriting, made with a point that is just the right degree of fineness. We will hold the sockets and pens for a few days until we hear from you. Yours very ey a We A. Since Washburn will soon be over and my nephew is making plans for next year's work, I will greatly appreciate a word from you when time permits. With kind regards, I am Fraternally, ercher, D.0. MZ-eb A Ene. MH Sa April 25, 1938 Dr. Forrest C. Allen Kansas University Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doctor Allen: Being connected with K.U. for many years I thought you might be able to give me a helpful suggestion in a problem at hand. My nephew, Clinton Zercher, Jr. is finishing his second year at Washburn College as a student in the School of Business Administration. He joined the Fraternity in his first year and everything was going lovely. In January of this year his Father's business went to the wall which necessitated his taking some odd jobs here to enable him to finish the present semester. He moved out of the Frat house and has been living with me. My personal idea is that K.U. should have a much stronger course in Business Administration than this small local college. Also it would be my idea that he would have a better chance to be ' placed after graduation if he came from the State University. Am I correct in this? Would there be any chance for him to find work in Lawrence? If so, should he come down this summer and line it up or wait just pefore the fall term opens? He took Typing and Short-hand three years ago but, no doubt, is rusty in it now as he has not used it. The boy is a good student and would be willing to work at anything he could, however, he is small in stature and does not have the physique to do heavy work such as carrying ice. He has done some work in the local library and received government pay. Will appreciate any helpful suggestions when time permits. Cordially, Mary Z2ercher, D.Q. We are sure it is an organization which, if successfully continued, has in it possibilities for much good to the life of the campus; and it therefore has our hearty support. The recent criticisms have resulted in increased difficulty in obtaining off-campus support for this work, It becomes necessary, therefore, for those of us within the University to do all we can to help in this difficult time, Last year the Faculty contributed over $600. So far this year we have not solicited the Faculty, but already some half dozen members have contributed $100, We are now asking the entire Faculty to make as generous a contribution as possible, as much of it as possible in cash, and the rest in pledges to be paid by Commencement. Will you please make your pledge on the enclosed card? If possible, attach your check and send it to Mr. Harold Ingham, Treasurer, Fraser Hall, We are sure that your response will be generous and that your investment will be worthwhile, Signed by: Allen Crafton Fred J, ‘Moreau Raymond H, -Wheeler Paul B, Lawson REPORT OF CURRENT Y.M.C.A.
