7TH WAR LOAN «+ RETAIL DIVISION
INSTRUCTIONS TO CONTESTANTS

Invasion is now on = The Retail Division contest begins today,
May 14th and closes Saturday, May 26th.

As bond sales people progress fram one rank to another of the
Invasion Army, they will receive their Badges of Rank from each
Block Captain. It is requested that each retail establishment ap-
point a representative to contact the Chamber of Commerce daily
before 10 A.M. reporting promotions within the store for the pre-
ceding day. All work sheets (copy attached)signed by customers
purchasing bonds must be delivered to Bond Headquarters at the
Chamber of Commerce not later than 10 A.M. Monday morning May 28th.

Actual sales only are to be counted in the contest and to be
reported on an individual basis with'no grouping of employees sales.

Badges of Rank will be awarded as follows:

The prizes to be awarded to the seven sales people selling the
greatest amount (maturity velue) in dollars of "E" Bonds are:

First Prize - One $100, Bond
Second Prize - One 50. Bond
Third thru Seventh Prizes - One $25. Bond to each

In addition to the above Stan Schwahn, Manager of the
Lawrence Commonwealth Theaters is giving one yeers pass (Jayhawk
Theater) to the Individual of the Retail Division selling "E" Bonds
to the greatest number of people.

An incentive for your customers to buy bonds will be a
drawing at the Jayhawk Theater May 28th for four $100. bonds and
twenty-six $25. bonds, Details on this have been announced in the
papers.

We're off for $1,085,000 "E" bond sales in Douglas County.

Dear Fellew Faculty Members and Employees:

I have just returned from the 7th War Loan downtown retail division Bond
Rally at the Jayhawker Theatre. From 9 to 10 o'clock this morning Mr. Irving Hill,
the county chairman of our war loan drives, stressed especially the fact that there
is plenty of money in the Lawrence banks to insure the success of our $1,085,000
"E" bond sales, He said, "The money is there. You workers go out and get it."

W. G. Beougher and Leo Eller, co-chairmen, gave a straight-from-the-shoulder
message, and Mrs. Henry Werner explained the action of the residential section
drive. Stanley Schwahn, Lawrence Commonwealth Theatres manager, donated the use
of the theatre for the meeting and put on a Bob Hope-Bing Crosby-Frank Sinatra-
Fibber McGee picture that added to the impressiveness and the necessity of helping
our boys svor in the Pacific.

Capt. Lindley Hines, of WREN, the squadron leader of the B-24s in the South
Pacific, spoke. profoundly on what our boys have been meeting over there and how
much they depend on the home front for inspiration, information and affection, as
well as for food, for gasoline, for ammunition and guns, and for ships to fight
the Japanese with. Capt. Hines continued, “There are only two things that the
boys want more than anything else in the world, ~ first, to get this war over, and
secondly, to get home." After three years of meritorious service, Capt. Hines has
been returned to us.

The retail division downtown is functioning as an invasion army. They have
' block captains and badges of rank will be awarded for bond sales, A $50.00 bond.
sale rates the rank of Private First Class, and a $7,500 sale rates a General's
stars, while a $750 bond sale rates the Captain's bars. How much easier it is for.
an invasion army like that to funetion, laudable as it is, than for an invasion
army at Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Saipan, Leyte, and the other thousands of Japanese hells.

You will read in the daily paper that the Lawrence theatres, in cooperation
with Lawrence business firms, have made it possible for E bond purchasers to parti+
cipate in a Free Bond Award on Monday night, 9 pem., May 28, at the Jayhawker
Theatre. Obtain your special bond ticket from the bank when buying your E bond,

No accrued interest need be collected on subscriptions for $500 or $1,000 of
