PALM CANYON DR. - TEL. 7337 October 19, 1945. Miss Eloise Penner, 1232 Louisiana St., Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Miss Penner: Congratulations! I think the students! have done nobly. I knew that they would do it because their hearts are in it. I cculd tell when I met thom Monday afternoon that they wanted to do a grand job, and they are doing it. We hope the drive continues as successfully as it has stexrted. Sincerely yours, Director of Physical Education, PCA:AH Varsity Basketball Coach. October 18, 1643 Professor ds M. Kellogg, Department of Architecture, “University of Kenses. My dear Mr. Kelloggr — I want to thank you for your very frank letter which I have just received. I assure you that I can appreciate the forebodings that you have. i too share some of your ideas. 3 May I give you a short history of this funding of all things in one drive. The idea first started in Alabama and then spread to Ind- dana and some of the eastern states. In Alabama the people went to the governor and said, "There are so many solicitations, why can we not include them all in one?" It was started there and found to be successful. . ce Finally, this single giving had assumed auch proportions that it ‘was presented to the President of the United States. He approved it, and it now seems to be the rule rather then the exception. I only mention this to show you that it is not a local proposition. You will understand I am not endeavoring to dcbate your arguments, be- cause I have already told you that I agree with some of your reactions, It is possible for you to make individual sontributions to certain things. At our workers meeting this morning it was definitely stressed that if any individual wishes to make « particular contribution to a certain thing, all that will be necessary is to have you write on the of your pledge card the organizations that you wish to benefit. on the front of the card a refersance to your statement on the back, and these organizations only will be oredited with your contribution. I still think you would make a fine solicitor because you have been discrininating in important questions. And a good solicitor is one who is well informed of the facts. Thank you so much. Stasernly yours, Director of Physical Education, Varsity Basketball Coach. eset g E UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE ARCHITECTURE LAWRENCE, KANSAS October 16, 1943 Dr. Forrest C. Allen, Chairman, University Committee National War Fund and Community Chest. Dear Dr. Allen; I received your mimeographed request to serve on the University Committe for this War Fund and Community Chest campaign. I am not a@ good solicitor anyway, but aside from that, in this particular case I could not be of sufficient service to the cam- paign, as it seems to be planned. Naturally I am thoroughly in sympathy with the idea behind it all, and intend to help out financially to the limit of my re- sources; but I do not like the way this thing is beins done this time at all. I do not think that the Community Chest and the National sé- called War Fund should be combined. I also do not see any way for an individual contributor to state where or how he should like his own money to go--that is to what particular organizations. I think that is not only his right, but is an essential part of & proper solicitation campaign. . Hitherto, in my own case, for instance, I have been glad to assist various of the organizations and Broups ( both in the Com- munity Chest group, and others in what are now included in the War Fund group) but I have not been in entire sympathy with the policies or methods of spending of certain other organizations, and I think I have a right to differentiate among them. Not to have this privilege is to spoil the whole idea and morale building effect of such a charity campaign, and turn it into just another form of general tax. i) I may be mistaken in this assumption of mine, but it, what I gather from conversation, and the form of the contribution card you sent me. If I am mistakem, please let me know, for I would not want to have a false impression. At any rete you see I would not make a good solicitor] So please excuse me from that duty, which otherwise would have been a4 privilege.
