LAWRENCE COMMUNITY CHEST, rnc. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WREN BUILDING October 9, 1943 LAWRENCE, KANSAS OFFICERS WALTER SCHAAL, PRESIDENT A. E. WorEsTEMEYER, 1ST V1CE-PRESIDENT Mrs. Cary J. Dopps, 2Np VICE-PRESIDENT E. J. Coy, TREASURER Grorce HeEprick, SECRETARY Dr. F.C. Allen, President, Rotary Club, Lawrence, Kansas. Dear Dr, Allens During the week of October 18th to 25th the National War Fund is presenting to all of the peoples of the United States an appeal for service to our fighting forces, for service to the unconquerable peoples of the United Nations and for service to the home front in the United States. The following organizations are all joined in one campaign----the USO and 16 other agencies serving the common war aim in foreign lands, those guiding the families of service men, war workers, and their families towards necessary health, welfare and recreation. . General Eisenhower asks prompt and abundant support. The secretary of the Navy has issued a general order to all branches of the Navy to support the National War Fund to the limit. Our Secretary of War has done the same. Leaders all over the country say that of all their philanthropic donations the National War Fund Drive will top their list, so we as Kansans will say, "Sure, I'll take a Kansan's share because a share in the National War Fund is a share in winning the war". You will see, hear and read more favorable publicity about the National War Fund Drive than any other philanthropic campaign. We are combining the National War Fund with our own Community Chest Drive and you will find enclosed a descriptive folder listing the seventeen organizations of the National War Fund and those in our Community Chest. We are hoping that all the lodges, clubs and organizations in Lawrence will contribute as generously as possible to this very worthy cause. Will you please have this letter read at your next meeting and all contributions may be sent to the Community Chest--War Fund, Chamber of Commerce, WREN Building. Yours very sincerely, Te vl. Aiien University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas Dear Doctor Allen: You started our 1943 Community and National War Fund Drive with a lot of fire and you wound up with a record-breaking contribu- tion from KU. Nice Going would be a modest and reserved way of ex- pressing your accomplishments. The fine teamwork you developed through the Y.W.C.A., I believe, will have a decided double value, The money obtained and equally important the benefits it should give to next year's campaign. Attached is an advanced report of this year's drive. I have a suspi- cion that the Hercules estim ted figure is conservative. You know me well enough to know that I appreciate the sup- port you gave me as well as the very excellent job. Most important, I believe we all wanted to let the 1800 Douglas County boys know that we folks, back home, are interested in them to the extent that we will get the home front job done as it should be. Mrs. Hulteen spoke to me regarding your suggestion for es statement to be placed on the card as to designation of donations to certain organizations. Personally, it is my opinion that the committee desired to keep that down as much as possible, wless the donor specified on the card that his gift should go to a particular organization. They were afraid that in the confusion it would a¥ouse much dis- cussion that might be inimical to the greatest giving. We certainly had to hemmer hard to get over the goal and we wont over with a bang but it took concerted action by everyone, and an inhibition of any outside discussion to con- centrats our whole efforts on the consummation of this splend- id drive.
