October 16, 1942 To Heads of Departments in the University: The Committee on the University in Wartime is anxious to find as quickly as possible ways in which the worl: of the University can be adapted to the pressing demands of the war effort. Will you, therefore, consult with the members of your department as‘to short courses which might be offered in special fields; the possibilities for speeding up and intensifying the work in courses now extended over a longer period than many students are likely to have in the University; and the opportunities for long-time courses which would provide special train- ing in fields which would contribute to the war effort, or to problems which may arise after the conclusion of the war. Please send any suggestions which your department can make to the chairman of the Committee, 203 Fraser, as soon as possible. It is only by the full and immediate cooperation of every department that the work of the Committee can be made effective. Very truly yours, ds Ww. Ashton
