HOME ADDRESS CHANUTE, KANSAS ; TOPEKA, KANSAS HUGO T. WEDDELL JUSTICE, KANSAS SUPREME COURT Ss TOPEKA, KANSAS October 5, 1942 MWe. Ferrest ©. Allen Lawrence, Kansas Dear Phog: I have sent a sort of general gun-shot letter: to attorneys and gome other friends whom I do not know as intimately as I do you, concerning my candidacy for a second term. Of course, it would not seem or be natural to write youra formal letter. tT really wish you would give my campaign a good lift. I shall not worry about the result if my good friends will really give my campaign some personal attention. Frankly, what I am con- cerned about is that too many of my best friends are saying — "Oh, Wedell has nothing to worry about" - and are therefore doing little, if anything, about my campaign. I need not tell YOU such an attitude is always dangerous. That attitude came near being fatal in my 1936 campaign in counties where I had the most intimate friends. After losing those counties in the primary or general election many of my friends, whom I had previously asked for help, wrote and admitted they had not done much because they did not know my opponent and, therefore, thought I was safe. I am anxious oe to avoid that result this fall. Owing to my tire shortage I can’t make an extensive personal Y" campaign this year. Court convened September 28th and it will. take most of my time. There are, of course, various ways in which you can help and I am taking the liberty of enclosing a few suggestions. I would, however, appreciate it a lot if you would at least contact from twenty-five to fifty men or women and ask each of them to men- tion my candidacy to a dozen of their friends. I am sure you know I am grateful for what you have done in the x past and I want to thank you in advance for all you may do in my behalf now. Cordially fours, W:H f; Chhhp enc. _ () Hugo T. Wedell ~
