Athletic Director, has been referred to me. I can appreciate what
a difficult time you must have with some of those half- » toady
boys from the east. You know, a lot of those fellows think that
_ when they travel to Philadelphia they have gone “way out west"; and
when they have gone to Pittsburgh - well, that is half way across
the world; and when they get to the middle west they have gone no
_pleeee They have never heard of the Pacifie Coast, a lot of then,
but I am afraid a lot of them will before the war is over.

If I sent you a record of the K.U. team, which I would be
aah & it wuldn't change their opinion any. But I have here
on my desk a sopy of Dick Dunkel's Team Rating and Forecast for the
week ending January 16, 1943. Not so much for your information, but
so that you can give an explanation to those toady boys, I am sending
you an excerpt from this rating sheet which should explain to those
fellows (although they may not get it) the things that an ordinary
citizen would have no difficulty in absorbing.

"Dick Dunkel's ratings are based on the cumulative eorrelation of
scoring differential with rating of opposition, and they have been.
continuous since the 1935 season. They show the potential scoring
difference between any two toams. Thus, a 45.0 team should defeat
a 55.0 team by 10 points, if they were to meet on a neutral court
and play strictly according to past performance. However, research

points better on its home court than when visiting. Therefore, in
the forecast below, 2.0 points have been added to the neutral rating
of each home team, and 2.0 points have been subtracted from the
neutral rating of each visiting team. The standings show neutral
